Newborn Found with Umbilical Cord Still Attached on Manhattan Subway Station Stairs

Lauren Jarvis-Gibson | October 23, 2025

A newborn baby was found abandoned on the stairs of a Manhattan subway station on Monday morning, her umbilical cord still attached.

According to the NYPD, the infant was discovered around 9:27 a.m. at the 34th Street–Penn Station subway stop, on the stairs leading to the southbound platform.

Police said they received a 911 call alerting them to the baby’s presence. The newborn was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

“The baby is in a stable condition and remains at Bellevue Hospital. The investigation is ongoing as officers look for video footage,” an NYPD spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Demetrius Crichlow, president of MTA New York City Transit, praised the swift response of those who reported the incident, calling it “The Miracle on 34th Street” — a reference to the classic holiday film.

He also confirmed the baby was discovered after an anonymous caller alerted authorities.

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from Penn Station in an effort to identify who left the child there.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made. Police have released an image of a possible suspect — a woman seen in a brief two-second security video walking along a city sidewalk carrying what appears to be a bundled object, held the way one would hold a baby. Authorities are treating the case as endangering the welfare of a child.

New York state law allows parents to safely relinquish a newborn up to 30 days old at a hospital, staffed police station, or fire station without fear of prosecution.

On October 21st, police responded to another case involving an unattended baby — this time at a Dunkin’ Donuts in the Bronx.

Officers received a 911 call shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday about a child left alone inside the coffee chain.

Authorities said the baby boy, who was believed to be around 3 to 4 months old, was found sitting in a stroller, conscious and alert. He was later reunited with his mother.
