WATCH: Police officers rescue baby from hot car as summer heat continues to rise

Ryan Brennan | July 7, 2025

Parents are torn after a video of two police officers rescuing a baby from a hot car went viral.

On June 17, the City of Corona Police Department responded to a call of a baby found alone in a hot vehicle parked in a parking lot with the engine turned off and windows rolled up.

According to the police department, the baby was in distress upon the officers’ arrival.

Body cam footage, which was released by the City of Corona Police Department on June 24, shows the two officers arriving on the scene before breaching the driver-side window and unlocking the rear door.

An aerial video then shows one of the police officers patting the baby boy’s back as he takes him out of the back seat.

The police department later confirmed that the internal temperature of the vehicle was found to be 110 degrees, according to a thermo-device used by the Corona Fire Department.

“LEAVE NO KIDS UNATTENDED!!” the police department wrote at the top of their post.

Corona PD Sgt. Robert Montanez, who spoke with “Good Morning America,” said the child was believed to be alone in the vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes, though an exact timeframe is unknown.

No further information was provided — including the names of the parents — and it’s unclear at this time whether charges would be filed.

The video, however, serves as a reminder to NEVER leave a child, or pet, unattended in a vehicle, especially as the summer heat continues to rise.

The National Weather Service estimates that the temperature inside a car can rise as much as 20 degrees in 10 minutes and 50 degrees in one hour.

Since a baby’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s, a heat stroke can occur within minutes.

An average of 37 kids under 15 die each year after being left in a hot vehicle — including 39 confirmed deaths in 2024 and 13 reported deaths so far in 2025, according to the National Safety Council

“Nearly every state has experienced at least one death since 1998,” per the National Safety Council.

Parents share mixed reactions after police video goes viral

As the City of Corona PD’s video went viral, many parents took to the comments to share their reactions.

“I can’t imagine someone doing this to a baby!!!! I brought my 12 pack of sodas into work today because I was afraid of them exploding in the car with this heat,” one Facebook user wrote under the video.

“I can’t understand how anyone would leave anything in a hot car, none the less kids and animals. I have to think it’s laziness? Idk,” another user commented.

One user even attempted to reason with the unidentified parent(s) who left the baby behind.

“The baby appears very young, and this may be their first child. If so, postpartum can wreak havoc on a new mother. It could be she just forgot she now had a child in her postpartum fog,” one user wrote.

“As parents, we make horrible mistakes all the time and thankfully most are lucky enough to not have a bad outcome,” the user continued.

Other commenters shared tips and advice in hopes of preventing a future tragedy.

“Leave your left shoe in the back with baby. When you get out of the car it will remind you,” one Facebook user wrote.

“As a foster parent who has kids come and go, I would always put my purse in the back next to the car seat,” another user commented.

If you witness a child left unattended in a vehicle, don’t hesitate to take action. If the driver is nowhere to be found, contact 911 and be prepared to break a window if police officers don’t arrive fast enough.
