"The most incredible person I’ve ever known and will always be my hero."
Robin Roberts has been absent from “Good Morning America” this week — and now we know why.
The 64-year-old TV host, who last appeared on GMA on July 24, took to Instagram several days later to share a photo of her and her wife Amber Laign in Rwanda celebrating their 20-year anniversary.
“Wonderful way for the two of us to celebrate 20 years as a couple…it certainly has been an adventure!” she wrote in the caption.

Roberts clarified that she and her wife are in Rwanda as guests of former NBA executive Masai Ujiri and his organization Giants of Africa, which empowers African youth through basketball, per its website.
“Every last Saturday in the month in Rwanda is a national day of service!!” Roberts added in her post.
In a post of her own, Laign described the couple’s trip as “one incredible journey.”
“Robin and I celebrated our 20-year anniversary in a way we’ll never forget — in Rwanda, with Giants of Africa, surrounded by the energy, joy, and spirit of youth from 20 African countries,” Laign wrote.
“From dancing to community service that touched our hearts, this experience reminded us what truly matters: connection, purpose, and giving back,” she added.
Roberts and Laign met on a blind date in 2005 and tied the knot in September 2023, according to People.
Roberts previously opened up about the couple’s milestone
On July 26, prior to her trip to Rwanda, Roberts took to Instagram to share her daily “morning message.”
In the caption, she asked her viewers to share what they’re most grateful for.
“Allow me to share that I’m grateful that Saturday is the 20th anniversary of my first date with Sweet Amber,” she wrote.
Her message was centered around “sacred relationships” and learning to love those around you.
“Speaking of sacred relationships, Saturday — 20 years that I’ve been a couple with Amber. 20 years!” she said at the end of her video.
“So, we’re going away — going abroad — and going to a place that many have on their bucket list. Have yourself a blessed day and thank you so much. You are a blessing,” she concluded.
Roberts and Laign, who are both cancer survivors, previously teased their 20-year anniversary plans in an interview with People in June.
“We're [actually going] to Rwanda. Because we wanted to celebrate that way, because our time together has been an adventure,” she told the outlet at the time.
“We keep it fresh,” Laign added. “You've got to keep it fresh, have our little date nights. We're on a little date night tonight.”
