Wynonna Judd’s daughter accuses stepfather of sexual abuse, says mom was ‘never a mother’

Ryan Brennan | August 25, 2025

Wynonna Judd’s daughter Grace Kelley is accusing her stepfather of sexual abuse — and claiming that her mom helped cover it up until police got involved.

Kelley, the 29-year-old daughter of Judd and her first husband Arch Kelley III, opened up about the abuse, which allegedly occurred when she was 10, in an interview with The Daily Progress in July.

Judd and Kelly III also share a 30-year-old son Elijah, according to People.

In her interview with The Daily Progress, Kelley claimed that the alleged abuse came at the hands of her stepfather D.R. Roach, who was Wynonna Judd’s husband from 2003 to 2007.

Roach was arrested and later convicted of attempted aggravated sexual battery against a minor in 2007, according to CNN.

At the time, Reuters reported that the charges “were defined as inappropriate fondling and touching but not penetration.”

The investigation against Roach began in February 2007 when Kelley was 10 years old, but the victim of the sexual abuse was never publicly identified, according to Reuters.

Judd filed for divorce immediately after Roach’s arrest in March of that year, per KUSA.

The singer went on to marry musician Cactus Moser in 2012 and the two have been together ever since, according to People.

While talking to The Daily Progress in July, Kelley accused her mom — a Grammy-winning country music star and one-half of The Judds with her mother Naomi — of covering up the sexual abuse.

“When they found out in counseling what he had done to me, they’re like, ‘Wait a minute. We’re going to report this to law enforcement,’” Kelley said of the abuse, according to People

“When he was arrested and it came out in the news, that’s when she divorced him,” she continued.

Kelley went on to describe her mom as a “good performer,” but claimed she “was never a mother.”

“So is my mom rich? Yeah, she’s so rich that she was able to sweep me under the rug and abuse me and then cover it all up,” she told The Daily Progress.

Wynonna Judd spoke of Roach’s arrest in a 2010 interview with Oprah

In an old episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which aired on Sept. 17, 2010, Wynonna Judd was asked to talk about her ex-husband’s arrest three years prior.

The “Tell Me Why” singer said she first learned of the arrest in an airport golf cart and immediately went into “mama bear mode,” according to Oprah.com

"He was out of the house within the hour," she said in the interview. "I called him everything I could think of. I had a moment where I let it all fly, and then it was done."

Judd didn’t disclose who the victim was, but clarified that she knew the victim.

"This story is so deep and wide. There's more to it than I can tell you," she said, per CNN. "Because of the child, I won't speak about it. It's their story [to tell] when they're ready to talk."

Kelley’s recent allegations come after a decade of legal woes, arrests and substance abuse issues.

She was first arrested in 2015, sentenced to eight years in prison in 2018, released in 2019 and arrested again in 2021, according to Page Six.

In 2022, Kelley welcomed her first and only child — a daughter named Kaliyah Chanel, per the Miami Herald.

Judd has been raising her granddaughter Kaliyah amid Kelley’s continued legal woes, which include several arrests in 2024, per Page Six.

In her interview with The Daily Progress, Kelley claimed to be sober after finding religion and relocating to Charlottesville, Virginia. A move she talked more about in an additional interview with People.

“This is the first time in my life that I’ve genuinely been at peace,” Kelley told People, exclusively.

“I wake up every day at the same time. I make breakfast. I send my boyfriend on his way to work. I go to work. I go to my Bible study and it’s just a peaceful, simple life, and I’m happy," she said of her new routine in Charlottesville.

As for why Kelley made the decision to share her story now, Kelley told People that “I just never had a voice to talk about any of this. I don't want to stir the pot, but ultimately, the Bible says the truth will set you free. So I’m here to tell the truth and talk about it, because I want to share my story.”

“My entire life, the reason I travel so much is I was looking for home,” she added in her original interview, per Page Six. “But ever since I came to Charlottesville and I gave my life to God — oh, man, it’s just beautiful. I love it here.”
