Kindergartener’s priceless reaction to the harsh reality of kindergarten. ‘Why did you sign me up?’

Ryan Brennan | September 24, 2025

It’s safe to say that this 5-year-old girl’s first day of kindergarten didn’t quite go as planned.

After picking her daughter McKenzie up from her first day of school, Gimeka Gentry — a mom of four in South Carolina — decided to take a video of her daughter sharing what she learned as a kindergartner.

What came next has everyone — kids and adults alike — nodding in agreement.

“I didn’t take no nap at kindergarten,” McKenzie said in the backseat of the car. “I asked Ms. Jones, ‘Do we take naps over here?’ and (she) said, ‘No.’ I said… ‘Oh.’”

McKenzie went on to explain how tired she was and how she was the only person who yawned throughout the school day.

“Why did you sign me up for kindergarten?” the little girl asked her mom.

“I couldn’t take a nap — nothing — nowhere. I couldn’t take a nap in the classroom, I couldn’t take a nap anywhere. I was so tired,” she continued.

According to TODAY, McKenzie was treated to a meal at McDonald’s after school, but ended up falling asleep in the car ride home while eating her french fries.

“My baby first day and let’s just say kindergarten won,” the video’s caption read.

McKenzie’s aunt, Appolonia Maxton, uploaded the video to her TikTok, which has since received more than 1.2 million views and 209,000 likes.

“You can have a conversation with her and she’ll have you laughing the whole time,” Maxton told TODAY of her niece. “Kids say the darndest things.”

McKenzie’s first day of kindergarten has everyone relating

We all remember how peaceful nap time was in pre-school, but we also remember how disappointed we were when that tradition stopped.

After all, nap time in school is essential for younger kids who need naps throughout the day.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), kids between the ages of three and five need anywhere from 10-13 hours of sleep each day, including naps.

And several studies have concluded that nap time in schools can benefit school learning, according to a paper published in the “Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience.”

Yet, most schools do away with nap time by kindergarten as they try to teach the importance of a full night’s rest.

“In kindergarten, we’re trying to shift sleep from the classroom into the bedroom and focus on a solid night of sleep,” pediatrician Dr. Heather Felton said in an interview with TODAY.

“Kids usually drop their afternoon naps, on average, anywhere from ages 3 to 5, but there is a range ... and that’s OK,” Felton added.

But make no mistake — most of us would love an established nap time, no matter what age we are.

“This is how I feel about work. We need to take naps over here!” one user wrote under McKenzie’s viral video.

“I’m in college and asking same questions,” another user commented.

“We didn’t appreciate those naps enough,” a third user wrote.

According to a study conducted by researchers from the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School, nap time in schools can benefit teenagers too.

The study found that students who took an afternoon nap often performed better than those who didn’t.
