Jenna Bush Hager's daughter had perfect response to brother’s improved behavior over the summer

Ryan Brennan | September 2, 2025

Jenna Bush Hager’s son is living proof that being an only child isn’t always a bad thing.

During the Sept. 1 episode of “TODAY with Jenna & Friends,” the 43-year-old host shared a glimpse of what life was like at home after dropping two of her three kids off at summer sleep away camps.

And her experience was nothing like the one her guest co-host Savannah Guthrie had.

Guthrie, who enjoyed a three-week staycation with her husband after dropping both of her kids off at sleep away camp, praised the freedom she was given in a quiet house with no kids in sight.

But Bush Hager, who still had to care for her youngest child, wasn’t given that same freedom.

“He loved being an only child,” Bush Hager said of her 6-year-old son Hal, whom she shares with her husband Henry Chase Hager, according to People.

"And he actually was so well-behaved, and I told my girls that. I was like, 'Hal has gone through a major transformation without you guys here. He was excellent,'" she continued of Hal’s improved behavior.

Bush Hager’s comment elicited a cheeky response from her oldest daughter Mila, 12.

"And Mila goes, 'Maybe we're the problem,'" she said of her and her 10-year-old sister Poppy.

Guthrie went on to admit that her two kids don’t always see eye-to-eye and she was hoping their time at camp would bring them closer together because they got to see each other once per week.

When asked if it worked, Guthrie replied, “No, it didn’t, but they love each other.”

Guthrie and her husband Mark Feldman, who have been married since 2014, share an 11-year-old daughter named Vale, born in 2014, and an 8-year-old son Charley, born in 2016, according to People.

Jenna Bush Hager dropped kids off at camp days after Texas floods

Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, first opened up about dropping her kids off at a Texas sleep-away camp on the July 7 episode of her show.

At the time, the country was still mourning the loss of more than two dozen Camp Mystic girls and counselors as a result of the deadly Texas floods, per CBS News.

“You know, putting them on the bus, saying goodbye to them,”she said of the tragedy. “We send our kids into the world with the faith that they can have happy lives, joyful lives.”

Bush Hager’s children were dropped off at a different sleep away camp on July 6 — two days after the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in less than an hour.

“As adults, we know pain, we hope that our kids never faced and never face it,” she added.

The tragedy at Camp Mystic hit close to home for Bush Hager, whose mom was a former drama counselor at the camp.

She also had plenty of friends who were raised at the camp and even a few friends who sent their kids to Camp Mystic earlier this year.

“But you know, Texas is a resilient, incredible state. Y'all know I'm a homesick Texan living in New York, and it always is in my heart,” she added.
