Jessie J says breast cancer diagnosis ‘robbed’ her of precious memories with 2-year-old son

Ryan Brennan | August 21, 2025

Jessie J is opening up about how her breast cancer diagnosis is affecting her role as a mom.

During the Aug. 20 episode of the “Great Company” podcast with host Jamie Laing, the 37-year-old singer shared that she doesn’t feel like she can be the mom she hoped to be because of her diagnosis.

“Yesterday I sobbed, because I miss my boy,” Jessie J said of her 2-year-old rainbow baby.

The British singer welcomed her son Sky with boyfriend and pro basketball player Chanan Safir Colman in 2023 after suffering a miscarriage in late 2021, according to the Los Angeles Times

“I can't be a mom like I want to be a mom and I feel robbed,” she told Laing of her breast cancer.

“The worst part is… I feel like cancer has robbed me of memories with my boy,” she continued. “And anyone with a toddler knows that they change so much in that space of time. You blink and he’s chatting.”

Jessie J’s breast cancer diagnosis was first revealed to fans in a June 3 Instagram post

In the clip, she shared that she first learned of the diagnosis prior to dropping her “No Regrets” single, which was released in late April.

“Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding onto the word ‘early,’” Jessie J said on Instagram, adding that she’s been “in and out of tests” for the past few weeks and will be undergoing surgery soon.

The singer had previously announced the diagnosis in a May interview with Laing, but that episode wasn’t released as Jessie J needed more time to process it, per the video’s description

In the now-released episode, Jessie J said she’s finally ready to talk about her breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with on March 31.

Jessie J says she originally thought she was ‘going to die’

During the interview, Jessie J opened up about how she naturally uses humor to help cope with her breast cancer diagnosis.

She later revealed that she was originally told that the lump she found in her breast was likely a cyst and was convinced that it “wasn’t going to be anything” serious.

Not long after, doctors told her that the lump contained about 4-5 cm of cancer.

“I just burst into tears,” she said of the diagnosis. “They tell you the result and then they’re like, ‘We’ll be in touch.’ That’s when you’re just like, ‘Right, what happens next?’”

When she revealed the news to Laing in May, she felt a sigh of relief but later realized she hadn’t truly experienced the full scope of the diagnosis yet and wanted to wait before talking about it publicly.

At that point, she didn’t know exactly how serious the diagnosis was.

“When I had spoken about it with you,” she said of the May talk. “I had cried and had been scared and I was like, ‘I’m going to die.’”

She reiterated: “There was moments where I was like, this is going to go left and I’m going to die. And I had those moments.”

Jessie J underwent a mastectomy in June and took to her Instagram Stories on July 1 with an update.

““I’m good,” she wrote, according to People. “Missing being an active Mum/human the most. But it’s been nice to slow down and Sky is having a blast with Nanny and Grandad.”

While talking to Laing, she described her son as the “most hilarious, magical boy.”
