“They seem to have no kind of respect is what she was saying. And feeling a little entitled.”
If you were to ask Katie Couric how to be a good grandmother, she would tell you to keep your opinions to yourself.
The 68-year-old former co-host of the “Today” show became a first-time grandma in March 2024 when her daughter Ellie, 34, welcomed her first son named John Albert with husband Mark Dobrosky.
Now more than one year later, Couric is opening up about life as a new grandmother.

“My only ‘grandmother rule’ is to not tell my daughter what to do,” she told People on the red carpet of Stand Up to Cancer’s annual televised fundraiser in Nashville on Aug. 9.
Couric went on to describe her daughter as an “extraordinary mom” who is “doing an amazing job.”
“And when it comes to parenting, I just keep my trap shut,” she joked to People.
The veteran journalist shares two daughters — Ellie, born in 1991, and Carrie, born in 1996 — with her first husband Jay Monahan, according to People.
Monahan died of colon cancer in 1998 — two years after the birth of their second daughter. He was 42.
Couric’s grandson’s name has special meaning to the family
On March 24, 2024, Couric took to Instagram to announce the birth of her first grandchild — who was welcomed into the family the day prior.
“John Albert Dobrosky was born on his due date, Saturday, March 23rd at 8:23 am, just shy of seven pounds,” she wrote in the caption alongside a photo of the newly-minted family of three.
The post also included photos of Couric and her younger daughter holding the newborn baby boy.
In the caption, she revealed the special meaning behind the boy’s name.
“He will be called Jay in honor of his maternal grandfather. Albert is after Mark’s paternal grandfather,” she wrote at the time.
“Mom and Dad (Ellie and Mark) are over the moon 🌕 (it was a full moon) I am thrilled to have my first grandchild, Carrie can’t wait to be a cool Aunt and Molner is enjoying handing out cigars,” she added.
Couric was referring to her current husband John Molner, whom she married in 2014, according to Katie Couric Media. They celebrated their 10-year anniversary three months after the baby boy’s birth.
Couric described watching her baby have a baby as ‘wild’
Couric went on to write about the special day in her “Wake-Up Call” newsletter, also published March 24, 2024.
She opened the newsletter by revealing that she has a new screensaver — her grandson — and wrote that she and Molner “sat in the waiting area like kids on Christmas morning.”
Couric further revealed that the boy’s name was inspired by “all the Johns in Ellie’s life,” including her father (whose real name was John), both grandfathers, uncle and stepfather.
“The branches of our family tree are covered in J’s!” she quipped in the newsletter.
She went on to add that “witnessing your baby have a baby is wild” and revealed that her grandma name (for now) is Gogo.

“I know she’s going to be a wonderful mother, and I know Mark will be a parent who is an equal partner,” she wrote of her daughter and son-in-law. “Jay was like that. It makes all the difference in the world.”
