Nicole Richie’s daughter is taking the meaning of “new year, new me” to a whole new level.
On Jan. 12, the 44-year-old actress and fashion designer took to Instagram to share a series of old (and some new) photos of her and her daughter in honor of her daughter's 18th birthday.
“18 years of you,” Richie wrote in the caption.
Fans were quick to notice that the 18-year-old’s Instagram username, which was tagged in the post, made no mention of her first name Harlow.

Instead, she opted for the username @katemaddennn, while her bio simply read, “kate.”
Richie, who has been married to Joel Madden since 2010, shares two kids — daughter Harlow Winter Kate, 18, and son Sparrow James Midnight, 17 — with the Good Charlotte singer, according to People.
“That’s my girl,” Madden commented under his wife’s post.
Joel’s brother and bandmate, Benji Madden, also commented on the post — and it appears the Kate moniker goes beyond Harlow’s Instagram presence.
“How to make a grown man cry!!!” Benji wrote alongside multiple crying and red heart emojis. “love you Kate! You’re a bad ass! Never forget it! Happy 18!!”
“My Granddaughter. I love her so much,” Nicole Richie’s mom, Brenda Richie, added in a comment of her own.
In an interview with People, published Jan. 14, Richie confirmed what many fans suspected.
"Yeah, she goes by her middle name," she told the outlet at an event marking Australian makeup brand Nude by Nature's U.S. debut.
Richie went on to say that she "didn't look" at the comments fans left under her post, but she wasn't surprised to learn that her daughter's name change went viral.
"She has her whole life," Richie said of the reaction.

Richie and Madden welcomed their daughter Harlow on Jan. 11, 2008 — one month after they launched the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation.
In an interview with People, published the following month, Richie opened up about the origin story behind her then-newborn daughter’s name.
“I wanted a hippie name and he wanted a more biblical name,” she said of the couple’s preferences.
“I really like Jean Harlow the actress, and she likes Shalom Harlow the model. Harlow’s cool because it feels like a classic name,” Madden added at the time.

Richie went on to admit that she loved how unique the name Harlow was — though its popularity quickly changed.
According to the Social Security Administration, Harlow wasn’t a top 1,000 baby name until 2009 (the year after Richie’s daughter was born) when it debuted on the list at No. 905.
The name has continued to rise in the 15 years since and most recently ranked 293rd in 2024.
As for her daughter’s middle names, Madden liked how “serene and quiet” the name Winter was — which he likened to his daughter’s personality.
“I always liked the name Kate, but I knew I’d never name my kid that [as a first name] because it was just too plain,” Richie added of her daughter’s second middle name.
In honor of her daughter, Richie launched her House of Harlow jewelry line in 2008 and a fashion label called Winter Kate two years later.

“She has no idea that she has two lines named after her — I try and let her be a kid,” Richie said in a 2020 interview with People.
