Maturity comes with accepting — and even appreciating — your parents’ household rules.
For some of us, those rules were lenient at best. For others, they were a bit strict. But for TikTok star Hannah Burch, the rules she was forced to follow were more creative than anything.
In fact, they were so unique that the internet is calling her parents geniuses.
On Sept. 9, Burch — who is now a mom herself — posted a TikTok video opening up about some of the household rules her parents set when she was younger along side her four siblings.
“Things my family did growing up that might not be normal,” she wrote in the video.
While chores were an expectation with no monetary reward, her parents used money to motivate them in other ways — including giving them a few bucks if anyone complimented them on their behavior in public.
Her parents also did what she described as a “bunk check,” which pinned the boys up against the girls.

“My mom would come into our rooms every morning and give us points based on how clean it was,” Burch said in the video.
“At the end of the month, whichever team had more points — the girls or the boys — we would get paid or we would get to pick what family activity we did,” she continued.
Viewers were also impressed by her parents’ $20 dinner idea.
“Once a month, each sibling would go alone to the grocery store with my mom,” Burch explained. “She would give us a $20 budget to make dinner for the entire family.”
The sibling would then get to keep any money that was leftover.
“Genius! The 20$ dinner thing is great. Teaches kids the price of things and life skills on how to budget,” one TikTok user wrote in the comment section.
"I’m going to need your parents to write a book,” another user wrote.
Her parents’ household rules encouraged togetherness in the best ways
When Burch’s parents weren’t motivating her with money, they were encouraging strong family values.
For example, they weren’t allowed to hang out alone in their rooms and would spend most of their time together as a family — and they would do yard work together one day per month.
Her parents also banned them from watching “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” because the two main characters “were super disobedient to their parents.”

Elsewhere in the video, she revealed that they would open their Christmas stockings on Dec. 6 to celebrate Saint Nicholas Day.
“This list actually does not even scratch the surface,” she said at the end of the video. “For a little context, my family could not be closer and I hope that I am half the parent my parents were.”
In an interview with People, published Oct. 18, Burch applauded her strict parents for their efforts.

“There were definitely a few things my family did that may have been out of the norm,” she said. “But they really helped us get creative and learn responsibility and accountability, mostly without even realizing it.”
Her parents also encouraged nature over screen time — and didn’t give her a cell phone until she was 15.
“At the time, I remember this being really unpopular and feeling unfair, but now looking back, it’s a rule that I am so thankful for,” she told People.
“Because of this, I was able to have such a full and what felt like an extended childhood,” she added.

While most kids view household rules for families as nothing more than strict parenting, it’s not until we grow up that we learn to appreciate what those rules do for us in the long run.
