"I feel like they're just in this place where they're recognizing so many new things.”
Tony Hawk is giving his son his best parenting advice.
The 56-year-old professional skateboarder became a first-time grandfather last year when his son, Riley Hawk, and his son’s wife, Frances Bean Cobain, welcomed their first child.
Their son, Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, was born on Sept. 17, per CNN.

Now nearly eight months later, the 10-time X Games gold medalist is sharing his best parenting advice as his son, whom he shares with ex Cindy Dunbar, enters his own parenting era.
“I think it's just enjoy the small moments,” Tony Hawk said in an interview with E! News, published May 7.
“It's hard to to be that present when you're looking at a bigger picture of trying to teach them well, and get them going to school and learning how to dress themselves and whatever else,” he added.
But, according to Tony Hawk, sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.
“These small moments when they're cuddly and they're laughing, those are the ones that count the most,” he told E! News.
Tony Hawk went on to reveal that his lone grandson calls him “Papa” — a word he hopes Ronin says “soon enough” — and credited himself for making the little boy “laugh the hardest so far.”
Frances Bean Cobain — the only daughter of Courtney Love and late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain — took her relationship with Riley Hawk public in 2022 after a year-long hiatus from social media.
The couple tied the knot in October 2023, per People.
They announced the birth of their first child in a Sept. 28 Instagram post that featured black and white photos of the little one, including a photo of Riley Hawk holding Ronin.
“My favorite grandson,” Tony Hawk commented at the time.
In his interview with E! News, Tony Hawk — who has been married to Catherine Goodman since 2015 — described what being a grandparent is like now that he has Ronin.
“After raising six kids we are truly enjoying it,” he said of his and Goodman’s approach. “This is the most fun you can have as a parent, because you’re just the fun crew.”
Tony Hawk is also a father to sons Spencer, 26, and Keegan, 23, whom he shares with ex Erin Lee, and daughter Kadence, 16, whom he shares with ex Lhotse Merriam, per People.
Tony Hawk says being a grandparent is ‘a blast’

On Feb. 17, Tony Hawk took to Instagram to share a photo of him riding a skateboard with his grandson in his lap.
In the caption, he opened up about the “circles (wheels?) of life.”
“What happens when all of your kids can skate on their own and no longer rely on you to give them rides?” Tony Hawk wrote. “You wait until they have their own kids.”
In an interview with People, published May 6, Tony Hawk said he’s having “a blast” with Ronin.
"I understand why people gush about being grandparents. It's probably the most fun you can have,” he said — adding that Ronin is already catching on to just how cool his grandfather is.
"There's this look that Ronin gets on his face when he arrives at our house where it's like, 'Oh, this is the fun place. This is my domain to just enjoy myself,’” Tony Hawk explained.
“Not that he doesn't, but there are less rules here,” he quipped.
And while Ronin has already been on a skateboard, Tony Hawk isn’t going to pressure him into following in his footsteps.

"If he asks for it, it's his. Let's put it that way,” Tony Hawk explained. “Once he starts to talk, and if he requests it, then that'll be it."
