CNN’s Paula Reid underwent emergency surgery following birth of daughter Skylar

Ryan Brennan | September 29, 2025

Paula Reid is officially a mom of two — but her daughter’s birth was followed by a health scare.

The 43-year-old journalist, who has been with CNN since 2021 and is the network’s Chief Legal Affairs Correspondent, announced the birth of her little one in an interview with People, published Sept. 24.

Her newborn baby girl — named Skylar Dorothy — was born on Sept. 5, per an Instagram post

According to People, Skylar’s middle name was inspired by Reid’s maternal grandmother, Dorothy Stanton, who she says had the “biggest impact” on her life.

Dorothy, meaning “God’s gift” in Greek (via Dorothea, per Behind the Name), has been on a steady incline since falling out of the top-1,000 in 2007.

The name returned to the top-1,000 in 2011, according to the Social Security Administration, and has increased in popularity every year since — most recently ranking 431st in 2024.

Skylar, which means “scholar” but can also be an elaboration of the word sky, was a top-100 girl’s name between 2012 and 2022. It most recently ranked 134th in 2024, per the SSA.

In addition to Skylar, Reid also shares a 3-year-old daughter Jordan with her husband Jason, according to People.

"Our daughter Jordan is in awe of her baby sister and loves to help care for her," Reid told the outlet.

"Skylar gave Jordan a Princess Elsa dress upon meeting each other at the hospital — and Jordan has worn it every day since,” she added.

Paula Reid underwent emergency surgery after Skylar’s birth

Elsewhere in the interview, Reid opened up about the postpartum complications that came after she gave birth to Skylar.

"In the hour after Skylar's birth, I began hemorrhaging and underwent emergency surgeries, alongside three blood transfusions," she told the outlet.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, “postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is severe or excessive bleeding after childbirth” and could be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

PPH is generally characterized by a loss of more than 33 fluid ounces (1 liter) after delivery.

A blood transfusion “is when you receive donated blood in a hospital or other medical setting” and is often done in response to PPH, per the Cleveland Clinic.

"Heartfelt shoutout to the lifesaving work of our surgeons and blood donors!" Reid said of her emergency surgery.

But the postpartum complications didn’t stop there.

While Reid was discharged from the hospital after four days, she was rushed to the emergency room just a few hours after returning home.

She spent the next week in the hospital after being diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia.

According to the Mayo Clinic, postpartum preeclampsia “occurs when you have high blood pressure and excess protein in your urine soon after childbirth.”

"You hear a lot about the risks associated with being pregnant after 40, but you never think you will experience them," Reid told People. "Thankfully, our baby is doing great."
