A mother’s instincts should never be questioned — especially when having a record-breaking baby.
On July 29, Shelby Martin — a 30-year-old mom of four from Dixon, Tennessee — gave birth to her newest and biggest little baby, a boy named Cassian, at Tristar Centennial Women’s Hospital.
It was a moment she (and the rest of the operating room) will never forget.
That’s because her baby, who was delivered via C-section, came out weighing 12 pounds, 14 ounces.
For reference, the average birth weight of a full-term male baby is 7 pounds, 6 ounces, according to Medical News Today — meaning baby Cassian was more than five pounds heavier than most newborns.
Tristar Centennial later confirmed that Cassian is the biggest baby born there in the past three years.
“After loss comes light,” Tristar wrote in a Sept. 22 Facebook post. “Just one year after experiencing an unimaginable loss on her birthday, this mom welcomed the greatest gift -- Baby Cassian.”
He was also born on his mother’s birthday — making his birth that much sweeter (and more rare).

Martin’s mom, Carolyn Hines, took to Instagram to share a photo of her newest grandson.
"Our new grandson cassian Jude !! Another July 29. Birthday,” she wrote in the caption. “Grandson is 12 pounds 14 ounces 22 inches long our chunk!!!”
“Happy birthday Shelby Ann Martin,” she added. “And our fat peanut!!!”
Martin says her biggest little baby had the whole operating room gasping
In an interview with Today.com, published Oct. 13, Martin shared that her fourth pregnancy was unlike any of her previous three.
“I didn’t think I was going to survive!” Martin told the outlet. "My physical therapist later explained that he was essentially popping my hip joint out of socket."
At the 36-week mark, Cassian was already 10 pounds — which resulted in doctors recommending a C-section.
But even though they knew what to expect, Cassian shocked everyone when he came out.

“As soon as they pulled him out, everyone in the operating room collectively gasped,” she told Today.com. “They were absolutely shocked at his size.”
Cassian spent 10 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to his high glucose levels.
“When it comes to big babies sometimes when they are born their glucose levels are out of wack and they need to be monitored. He is on an IV and oxygen,” Hines wrote in an Instagram update on July 30.
By Aug. 1, Hines revealed that he was off the IV and his oxygen and glucose levels had stabled. He was sent home after 10 days in the NICU.
Now 10 weeks old, the little boy is already 16 pounds — putting him in the 97th percentile, per “Today.”
According to the Guinness World Records, a giantess named Anna Bates (née Swan) gave birth to the biggest baby ever born in 1879. Her baby weighed 22 pounds at the time of his birth.

Referred to as “Babe,” he was also the longest baby ever recorded at 28 inches, though he sadly died 11 hours later.
