Wisconsin mom delivers baby girl on her bathroom floor with only her toddler son by her side

Ryan Brennan | October 1, 2025

A Wisconsin math teacher is opening up about her unexpected birth story.

Shannen Krahn, who teaches eighth-grade math at Spring Harbor Middle School, was eight days away from her Sept. 23 due date when she started experiencing mild contractions on her way home from work.

Already a mother to her son Max, who turns two in October, Krahn knew exactly what to do.

She notified her substitute teacher, picked Max up from day care, called her husband Mitch — who was at work — and let her parents know that they would need a babysitter once they decide to go to the hospital.

Little did she know that her baby would arrive minutes before that hospital trip came.

By 6:50 p.m. on Sept. 15, Krahn’s contractions were coming every two minutes and she was given the green light to head to the hospital. She told her husband to finish up at work and head home.

Her water broke 30 minutes later. By the time she got to the bathroom, an even bigger contraction hit.

It was there that baby Brooklynn made her way into this world.

And while her husband hadn’t made it home yet, she had all the help she needed in her son Max.

“He was honestly my grounding point. He was so supportive and caring,” Krahn said in an interview with WMTV

“His little voice just saying, ‘Mama,’ just checking in on me. ‘I’m here for you. I know something isn’t right.’ He just kept patting my arm and touching my face like, ‘You’re good. We got this,’” she added.

Krahn’s husband walked in five minutes later and called 911. Both the mom and baby were healthy.

“I think I pushed like three times and out she came,” Krahn told WMTV.

“She let out a good cry and settled right in, and I grabbed a towel and got her wrapped up, and I just kind sat there for a second, like, ‘Holy crap, that just happened,’” she added.

According to the outlet, Brooklynn was born at 7:30 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces at birth.

In an interview with the Wisconsin State Journal, Krahn admitted that she “definitely felt a layer of scared,” but was comforted by her son Max — who she says is prepared for what he’ll experience in the future.

“I can tell his wife that he used to be a pro labor coach, because he’s already done it once,” she said.
