Dax Shepard reveals the real reason why he and Kristen Bell let their children swear

Ryan Brennan | July 30, 2025

Dax Shepard is opening up about life at home with two kids.

The 50-year-old “Parenthood” actor took to his “Armchair Expert” podcast on Monday, July 28 to discuss why he and his wife Kristen Bell allow their daughters Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, to swear in their home.

“I fully swear in front of my kids,” Shepard revealed to his guest late night talk show host Seth Meyers, adding that their two daughters are also allowed to swear under three conditions.

"They are allowed to swear, not with impunity,” he added. “But when it’s called for, and they land it, and it’s in the house and not out at a restaurant, it’s OK.”

Shepard went on to defend his parenting style, but clarified that he understands not everyone will agree.

"My defense of it is," Shepard argued, "I just told the girls, like, ‘Hey, these are noises that come out of your mouth, and you assign what they mean to you.'"

Meyers, who shares three kids — sons Ashe Olson, 9, and Axel Strahl, 7, and daughter Adelaide Ruth, 3 — with his wife Alexi Ashe, per People, was quick to write his name on the list of parents who disagree.

"For us, it’s the fear that they’re gonna take it to school,” Meyers said.

The two dads then joked that they could “probably trust” their daughters with hearing a swear word but not saying it. But they also agreed that boys are different.

“They’re going to say it immediately,” Shepard joked.

While Meyers says he’s against his kids using swear words, there are two words that pass the vibe check.

“When kids say ‘not again,’ it is genuinely my favorite thing,” Meyers said on the podcast before recalling a  recent memory when his son fell off his scooter and uttered the phrase.

Shepard and Bell have opened up about curse words before

As for Shepard and Bell, this isn’t the first time the couple has opened up about their swearing habits.

During a 2020 appearance on “Strahan, Sara & Keke,” Bell admitted that she and her husband are “not very good at editing ourselves” and don’t usually react when their kids repeat bad words, per E! News

But their leniency backfired when their then-5-year-old daughter Delta came home from school and asked why they never told her the "f-word" was a bad word after she heard one of her friends say it.

According to Bell, Shepard gave Delta the “best response.”

“He said, ‘Listen, you’re a kid,” she recalled. “There are a lot of things you can’t do until you’re an adult. One of them is drive my car. One of them is drink alcohol. Vote. And say swear words.’”

In 2019, Shepard and Bell went viral after sharing a video of their daughter explaining how one of her male classmates often uses the middle finger.

Shepard, again, stepped in to teach his daughter what the middle finger meant.

"Yeah, that's not a nice word," Shepard said in the video, per ABC News. "You know, that's a naughty finger and I never see you do that. It makes me so proud that you know that, yet you don't do it.”
