Celebrity baby names that prove great minds think alike when it comes to their children

Ryan Brennan | September 4, 2025

Celebrity parents have a way of surprising us — especially when it comes to their baby name ideas.

We’ve seen it happen recently when YouTuber Trisha Paytas named her newborn son Aquaman after already welcoming a daughter named Malibu Barbie and son named Elvis.

There’s also TikTok star Nara Smith, who shares kids Rumble Honey, Slim Easy and Whimsy Lou with her husband Lucky Blue Smith.

But there’s also another side of celebrity baby names that doesn’t get talked about as much — and it’s when celebrity parents prove that great minds think alike with their baby name ideas.

Just take one look at “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” stars Mayci Neeley and Mikayla Matthews.

The two co-stars gave birth to their “little besties” nine days apart with Matthews welcoming her daughter Lottie June on July 17 and Neeley giving birth to her daughter Charli May on July 26, according to People.

Both names can be considered nicknames for Charlotte, which the two moms alluded to on Instagram.

“You both can’t name your baby Charlotte,” they wrote over an Aug. 28 video of them fake crying — a supposed response to comments they received online.

While it’s unclear if their daughters’ legal names are Charlotte, they wouldn’t be the first celebrity parents to share baby name ideas — some of whom did so without even knowing it.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular instances of celebrity baby names being used more than once.

Charlie Wolf

It’s not everyday we see two celebrities choose the same name for their little ones, but it’s even more rare to have celebrity babies share the same first and middle names — unless that name is Charlie Wolf.

  • Zooey Deschanel and her ex-husband Jacob Pechenik welcomed a son named Charlie Wolf in May 2017.
  • Lauren Conrad and her husband William Tell share a son named Charlie Wolf, born in October 2019.
  • Carly Waddell and her ex-husband Evan Bass joined in on the trend with son Charlie Wolf in November 2019.
  • Other celebrities who named their child Charlie include Tiger Woods and ex Elin Nordegren, Mimi Rogers, Soledad O’Brien and Brad Raymond, and Sarah Chalke and ex Jamie Afifi

Charlie, a diminutive or feminine form of Charles meaning “man” or “army” in German, was the 176th most popular boy’s name in 2024, but ranked even higher (140th) among girl baby names that same year.

River Rose

River Rose is another popular example of celebrity parents choosing the same first and middle names for their babies, despite it being a rather unique and uncommon name for a newborn baby girl otherwise.

  • Kelly Clarkson and her late ex-husband Brandon Blackstock welcomed daughter River Rose in June 2014.
  • Derek Jeter and his wife Hannah Davis Jeter joined the trend with daughter River Rose in December 2021.
  • Nick Viall and his wife Natalie Joy gave birth to a daughter named River Rose in February 2024.
  • Other celebrity parents who chose the name River for their baby include Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, Vanessa Morgan and Michael Kopech, and Jamie Oliver and Juliette Norton.

Like Charlie, River is a gender-neutral name that’s growing in popularity in the U.S. after ranking 112th among boy names and 214th among girl names in 2024. Other water names include Brooke and Dylan.

Birdie

Birdie is one of the many animal names gaining popularity in the United States today — and celebrity parents are leading the way with this trend — though it was once a very popular name in the early 1900s.

  • Busy Philipps and ex Mark Silverstein welcomed their daughter Birdie Leigh in August 2008.
  • Maura West and her husband Scott DeFreitas gave birth to daughter Birdie the following year.
  • Brie Bella and her husband Daniel Bryan joined the trend with daughter Birdi Joe in May 2017.
  • Jessica Simpson and estranged husband Eric Johnson welcomed daughter Birdie Mae in March 2019.

Birdie was traditionally used as a diminutive of names like Bertha and Bernice, which explains why it was so popular a century ago. It wasn’t until 2021 that it started appearing in the SSA’s top 1,000 again.

Ocean

Ocean — here we go with the water names again — might be one of the most popular celebrity baby names in recent history, despite not ranking too high on the SSA’s most popular names of 2024.

  • Forest Whitaker was ahead of the curve when he named his son Ocean, whom he shares with an ex partner, in 1990.
  • Alexa PenaVega and her husband Carlos PenaVega welcomed son Ocean King in December 2016.
  • Taylor Frankie Paul and her ex-husband Tate Paul named their son Ocean, born in June 2020.
  • Desi Perkins and her husband Steven Perkins welcomed a son named Ocean in October 2020.
  • Lala Kent and her ex-husband Randall Emmett share a daughter named Ocean, born in March 2021.
  • Ashlyn Harris shares a son named Ocean, born in 2022, with her ex-wife Ali Krieger
  • Amber Heard joined the trend when she named one of her twins (the son) Ocean in early 2025.
  • Jesy Nelson and her boyfriend Zion Foster were the latest to join the trend with the birth of their daughter Ocean Jade in May 2025.

In addition to being a popular first name, celebrity parents also have a history of using Ocean as a middle name — including Jeff Goldblum’s son Charlie Ocean and Bonnie Wright’s son Elio Ocean.

Daisy

Daisy is one of the most popular flower-inspired names and one of the few to rank inside the SSA’s top-100 for girl names in 2024 — it ranked 76th, which is the highest it has ranked dating back to 1900.

  • Gavin Rossdale was on the front lines of this trend with the birth of his daughter Daisy, whom he shares with Pearl Lowe, in 1989.
  • Jamie Oliver and his wife Jools Oliver welcomed a daughter named Daisy Boo Pamela in April 2003.
  • Meg Ryan followed suit with the trend in 2006 when she adopted her daughter Daisy True.
  • Jason Sudeikis and his ex-wife Olivia Wilde share a daughter named Daisy Josephine, born in October 2016.
  • Katy Perry and her ex-husband Orlando Bloom welcomed their daughter Daisy Dove in August 2020.
  • Damian McGinty shares a daughter named Daisy June, born in March 2024, with his wife Anna Claire Sneed.

The name Daisy comes from the Old English word dægeseage, meaning “day eye,” which refers to the way the flower’s petals open at dawn and close at dusk. Other flower names include Lily, Iris and Dahlia.

Harper

Harper, which originated as a surname but has since grown to be one of the most popular baby names that end in -er, has quite the history among celebrity parents — from soccer stars to actors and actresses.

  • Shonda Rhimes was one of the early adopters of this name when she adopted a daughter named Harper Lee in 2002.
  • Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka continued the trend with the birth of their daughter Harper Grace in October 2010.
  • David Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham welcomed daughter Harper Seven in July 2011.
  • Bill Hader followed suit when he and his ex-wife Maggie Carey gave birth to daughter Harper in July 2012.
  • Jenna Fischer and her husband Lee Kirk joined in on the trend with their daughter Harper, born in May 2014.

Harper didn’t appear in the SSA’s top 1,000 until 2004, but it didn’t take long before it was mainstream. It jumped from 887th in 2004 to 54th in 2011 and has now been a top-12 girl’s name every year since 2014.

Jupiter

Jupiter, which has never ranked in the SSA’s top 1,000, was only given to 92 baby girls and 64 baby boys in 2024. That’s why it’s so surprising to learn that at least two celebrities have chosen it for their babies.

  • Ashley Tisdale and her husband Christopher French began the trend with the birth of their daughter Jupiter Iris in March 2021.
  • Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn followed suit by naming their daughter Jupiter, born in May 2022.

In Roman mythology, Jupiter is the king of the gods and the god of the sky, thunder, and light. He is the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Zeus, the son of Saturn and the husband of Juno, queen of the gods.

Axel

Axel has seen a gigantic shift in popularity recently. It ranked 799th on the SSA’s most popular boy names of 1999 before jumping to 361st in 2000 and has now ranked in the SSA’s top 100 every year since 2018.

  • Will Ferrell and his wife Viveca Paulin started the trend with the birth of their son Axel Paulin in January 2010.
  • Kaitlin Olson and her husband Rob McElhenney quickly followed suit when they welcomed son Axel Lee in September 2010.
  • Seth Meyers and his wife Alexi Ashe continued the trend with their son Axel Strahl, born in April 2018.
  • Though not spelled the same, Fergie and her ex-husband Josh Duhamel welcomed a son named Axl Jack in August 2013.

According to Behind the Name, Axel is the medieval Danish form of Absalom, which derives from the Hebrew name Avshalom and Hebrew elements av, meaning “father,” and shalom, meaning “peace.”

Maple

Maple, a unique tree-inspired name, hasn’t been relevant historically and was nowhere to be found on the SSA’s top 1000 most popular boy or girl names of 2024, but at least two celebrities felt inspired by it.

  • Jason Bateman and his wife Amanda Anka surprised everyone in February 2012 when they named their second daughter Maple Sylvie.
  • Kendall Schmidt and his wife Mica von Turkovich were the latest example when they welcomed daughter Maple in March 2024.

More recently, on Aug. 4, an Ohio couple welcomed quintuplets and gave them all tree-inspired names. They didn’t go with Maple, but they went with Juniper Cedar, Linden, Torrey, and Alder instead.

Onyx

Onyx is a rising gemstone name that didn’t appear in the SSA’s top 1,000 until 2018 and has since ranked as high as 307th in 2023 — and these two celebrity parents had a lot to do with its recent rise to stardom.

  • Rappers Iggy Azalea and Playboi Carti welcomed a son named Onyx in 2020 before announcing their split several months later.
  • Nick Cannon, who has 12 children with six different women, welcomed a daughter named Onyx Ice with model LaNisha Cole in September 2022.

Onyx, which derives from the Greek word onyx meaning “claw” or “nail,” is a variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz, known for its parallel bands of color. It's most often associated with dark black and deep colors.

Bear

Unlike Birdie, Bear doesn’t have a history of being popular in the United States, but it has now appeared on the SSA’s top 1,000 every year since 2018 and was given to 300 baby boys in the U.S. in 2024.

  • Alicia Silverstone and her ex-husband Christopher Jarecki started the trend with the birth of their son Bear Blu in May 2011.
  • Kate Winslet and her third husband Edward Abel Smith welcomed son Bear Blaze two years later in December 2013.
  • Liam Payne and his ex Cheryl continued the trend when they welcomed Bear Grey in March 2017.

Surprisingly, two of the three celebrities above chose a color-inspired middle name for their sons. While you won’t see a blue bear in the wild, it is possible to see a grey one — also known as a “glacier bear.”

Bodhi

Bodhi, which refers to the “state of enlightenment attained by a Buddhist who has practiced the Eightfold Path and achieved salvation,” per Merriam-Webster, has appeared in the top 1,000 each year since 2010.

  • Oliver Hudson and his wife Erinn Bartlett were one of the first to claim this baby name when they welcomed their son Bodhi Hawn in March 2010.
  • Megan Fox and her ex-husband Brian Austin Green helped further put the name on the map with the birth of their son Bodhi Ransom in February 2014.
  • Just a few days later, Teresa Palmer and her husband Mark Webber welcomed a son named Bodhi Rain.

Bodhi most recently ranked 302nd on the SSA’s list of most popular boy names in 2024, but some parents seem to prefer the variant Bodie, which ranked 346th. Bode and Boden are also common today.

Calliope

Calliope, another mythological name, first appeared on the SSA’s top 1,000 most popular girl names in 2016 and has now ranked inside the top-500 two years in a row — and these celebrities have helped.

  • Felicia Day was the first to put this name on the map with the birth of her daughter Calliope Maeve in January 2017.
  • Acacia Brinley proved how gender-neutral the name can be when she welcomed a son named Calliope in 2020 with her ex-husband Jairus Kersey

In Greek mythology, Calliope (also spelled Kalliope) is the oldest of the nine Muses and the patron of epic poetry. The name derives from the Greek words kallos, meaning “beautiful,” and ops, meaning “voice.”

Hazel

Hazel, another tree-inspired name that also doubles as a color-inspired name, was an extremely popular name in the early 1900s. It spent several decades outside of the top-100, but has since made its return.

  • Julia Roberts is the most famous example after she welcomed a daughter named Hazel Patricia with husband Danny Moder in November 2004.
  • Emily Blunt and her husband John Krasinski followed suit a decade later with the birth of their daughter Hazel in February 2014.

Hazel was a top-25 girl’s name in the early 1900s but fell out of the top-100 in 1937 and eventually out of the top-1,000 in 1976. It didn’t return until 1998 and has now been a top-20 name each year since 2023.

Sunday

It’s not everyday you see a baby named after a day of the week — even with Wednesday Addams being a popular TV character. But if you’re going to do it, then Sunday is the most logical and popular example.

  • Nicole Kidman and her husband Keith Urban were on the front lines of this trend when they named their daughter Sunday Rose, born in July 2008.
  • Comedian Mike Meyers followed suit with the birth of his daughter Sunday, born in April 2014, with his wife Kelly Tisdale

Parents might be surprised to learn that there were 232 baby girls and nine baby boys named Sunday in the United States in 2024 — compared to just 75 baby girls and no baby boys with the name Wednesday.

Marlowe

Marlowe, an often-overlooked water-inspired name, first appeared in the SSA’s top 1,000 in 2017 and ranked as high as 624th in 2024 when it was given to 476 baby girls. It was also given to 47 baby boys.

  • Sienna Miller and her ex Tom Sturridge started the trend in July 2012 when they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Marlowe.
  • Eva Amurri and her ex-husband Kyle Martino followed suit with the birth of their daughter Marlowe Mae in August 2014.
  • Jason Schwartzman and his wife Brady Cunningham welcomed a daughter named Marlowe Rivers in December 2020.

According to Behind the Name, Marlowe originated as a surname that translates to “remnants of a lake” in Old English. It was largely popularized by famous Elizabethan playwright and poet Christopher Marlowe.

Rio

Sticking with the water theme, the name Rio — which directly translates to “river” in Spanish and can refer to the Rio Grande — has been growing more and more popular each year since 2020, per the SSA.

  • Oliver Hudson and his wife Erinn Bartlett welcomed a daughter named Rio in July 2013.
  • Alexa PenaVega and her husband Carlos PenaVega joined in with the birth of their daughter, Rio Rey, in May 2021.
  • Peta Murgatroyd followed suit when she welcomed a son named Rio John with her husband Maksim Chmerkovskiy in June 2023.

Rio first appeared in the SSA’s top 1,000 in 2020 when it debuted at No. 774. It has been on a steady incline ever since and most recently ranked 516th in 2024 when it was given to 591 boys and 111 girls.

Lincoln

Lincoln, yet another water-inspired name popular with celebrity parents, originated as a place name that comes from the Brythonic word lindo, meaning “lake,” and Latin colonia, meaning “colony” or “settlement.”

  • Bill Murray chose this name for his youngest son Lincoln, born in May 2005, whom he shares with his second wife Jennifer Butler.
  • Kristen Bell and her husband Dax Shepard followed suit when they welcomed their first child, a son named Lincoln, in March 2013.

In addition to being a water-inspired place name, Lincoln is also viewed as a historical name thanks to former President Abraham Lincoln — though it only recently appeared in the SSA’s top 100 since 2013.

Mason

Like Harper, Mason originated as an occupational surname. It derives from the Old French word masson and was traditionally given to a “stoneworker” or “layer of bricks.” Today, it’s a popular boy’s first name.

  • Brandi Glanville and her ex-husband Eddie Cibrian named their first son Mason Edward, born in June 2003.
  • Melissa Joan Hart and her husband Mark Wilkerson also named her first son Mason in January 2006, though his middle name is Walter.
  • The most popular example comes from Kourtney Kardashian and ex Scott Disick, who welcomed a son named Mason Dash in December 2009.

Mason has always been a popular boy’s name, but it didn’t debut in the SSA’s top-100 until 1997. After the birth of Kardashian’s son, it rose to No. 2 in 2010 and remained in the top-10 until falling off in 2020.

Wyatt

Wyatt is another name that has risen in popularity since the turn of the century — and we have several celebrities to thank for that, including one that could help it reach “new heights” in 2025 and beyond.

  • Ashton Kutcher and his wife Mila Kunis started the bidding when they welcomed their daughter Wyatt Isabelle in October 2014.
  • Jason Kelce and his wife Kylie Kelce followed suit with the birth of their daughter Wyatt Elizabeth in October 2019 — their first of four daughters.
  • Anderson Cooper, who co-parents his kids with ex Benjamin Maisani, also joined in on the trend when they welcomed their first child, a son named Wyatt Morgan.

Despite traditionally being a boy’s name, two out of the three celebrity parents above went in the opposite direction with Wyatt. The name was given to a whopping 6,581 baby boys in 2024 and just 198 baby girls.

Celebrity parents have a way of influencing baby name ideas in the United States — and these celebrity baby names are perfect examples of that process being reciprocated time and again.
