Ellen Pompeo had quite the nerve-racking experience with TSA recently.
The 55-year-old “Grey’s Anatomy” star was making her way through airport security in March when she almost missed her flight due to a bag of unopened sunflower seeds in her luggage.
Pompeo relived the experience in an interview with “Travel + Leisure,” published May 29.

“I had a bag of sunflower seeds, like organic sunflower seeds from Erewhon, so they were probably the most expensive sunflower seeds money can buy,” she said.
The “Good American Family” actress clarified that she loves to travel (despite being a nervous flier) and often packs mints, glasses, water, hand sanitizer, baby wipes and snacks for the ride.
But, on this particular day, her seemingly harmless snack garnered a visit from the bomb squad.
“They literally held me for an hour, and they brought the bomb squad in,” she told the outlet. “And I was like, what is happening? Is this a joke?”
Pompeo was told that the alarms were likely tripped due to a chemical on the seeds’ packaging.
“I almost missed the flight. It was really like no one would ever believe this! I was texting my publicist saying, 'I might not get on this plane, and you're never gonna guess why,'” she added.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), “solid food items can be transported in either your carry-on or checked bags.”
Liquid and gel food items larger than 3.4 oz, however, are only allowed in checked bags.
“TSA officers may instruct travelers to separate items from carry-on bags such as foods, powders, and any materials that can clutter bags and obstruct clear images on the X-ray machine,” the TSA warns.
“Travelers are encouraged to organize their carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to ease the screening process and keep the lines moving,” the agency adds.

Elsewhere in the interview, Pompeo revealed some of her personal preferences when flying.
For example, the “Old School” actress prefers passing time by watching a show or reading a book. She also resorts to wearing a hat and using sign language with her kids to avoid drawing attention.
“I just usually have a hat on, and I don't speak. People recognize my voice, so I try not to talk,” she told the magazine. “The minute I open my mouth, everybody turns.”
She also prefers to not travel alone — and enjoys trips with her family more than anything.
Even if that means acting selfish.
“I like to hold my kids' hands when I take off, which is probably a little selfish,” she admits, “and they're probably feeling my anxiety, which probably isn't the best thing to do,”
Pompeo shares three children — daughters Stella Luna, 15, and Sienna May, 10, and son Eli Christopher, 8 — with her husband Chris Ivery.
The couple met in a grocery store in 2003 and started dating six months later, per Us Weekly. They tied the knot four years later in a secret wedding officiated by then-New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“I love any kind of trip as long as my kids are with me. I get a little bit anxious when I travel for work without my kids,” Pompeo told “Travel + Leisure.”
She goes on to describe traveling as the “best education there is,” especially for children.

“It's a privilege to be able to travel with these kids and bring them places, so I try to just have a lot of gratitude for that and show them as much as I can,” she added.
