They say there's no place like home for the holidays, and the Hilton family couldn't agree more.
Eric Dane’s wife is opening up about how his ALS diagnosis has affected their family dynamic.
In an interview with People, published Sept. 27, Rebecca Gayheart — who shares two kids with the “Grey’s Anatomy” alum — admitted that the family is taking things “day by day.”
"I don't think I'm at a place yet where I can pull out a positive nugget. I'm not there yet,” she told the outlet.
"I mean, it's heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we're just trying to get through it. It's a tough time," she added.
Gayheart went on to confirm that the family is working with “professional therapists” to help them maintain “hope and do it with dignity, grace and love.”
Dane and Gayheart started dating in 2003 and tied the knot in 2004 before welcoming two daughters — Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13 — into the family in 2010 and 2011, according to Us Weekly.
Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after 14 years of marriage, but requested to dismiss the divorce in March, per People.
Eric Dane’s ALS diagnosis was announced one month later in a statement shared by People.

“I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he told the outlet. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
While talking to People at Step Up's 2025 Inspiration Awards on Sept. 26, Gayheart admitted that her husband’s diagnosis has brought the family back together — though the circumstances aren’t ideal.
“Eric will always be my family, whether we're married or not, or living in the same house or not, but yeah, we are closer, but we don't like the reason why," she told the outlet.

ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is “a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord,” per The ALS Association.
It causes a person’s brain to lose connection with the muscles in their body, slowly taking away their ability to walk, talk, dress, write, eat, swallow and, eventually, breathe.
The average life expectancy once diagnosed with ALS is three years, per The ALS Association.
"It's a horrible disease, and I wish that there was a cure. I hope they find one soon, because it is just so sad,” Gayheart told People on Sept. 26.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that less than 30,000 people have ALS in the United States today — and that number grows by roughly 5,000 every year.
There’s currently no cure for it and it “almost always progresses” once it starts, per The ALS Association, but some treatments can help slow its rate of progression and improve the patient’s quality of life.
In June, Dane opened up about his diagnosis in his first interview since his announcement.
"I wake up every day and I'm immediately reminded that this is happening," Dane told GMA’s Diane Sawyer in the interview. “It’s not a dream.”

“I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me,” Dane added.
