Nick Jonas Opens Up About Social Anxiety at Golden Globes

Lauren Jarvis-Gibson | January 15, 2026

Nick Jonas, 33, made an unexpected exit from the 2026 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 11, leaving fans wondering what had happened to the Burning Up singer and youngest Jonas brother.

Footage shared by Parade shows Jonas stepping outside the venue, pausing to sip water and take a moment away from the crowd. The brief scene quickly circulated online, prompting speculation about the reason for his sudden departure.

Addressing the chatter on X, Jonas confirmed a fan’s suggestion that he had been struggling with social anxiety. “Yeah…it hit me like a gut punch,” he wrote, referencing the title of his latest single, Gut Punch.

Fans quickly rallied in support of the singer, many sharing their own experiences with anxiety. “You are doing amazing, Nick!!! I have anxiety too, so I relate to this. So proud of you,” one fan wrote. Another added, “It’s okay! It gets the best of us all sometimes.” A third commented, “We feel that!! Self care always!!”

Jonas’s single Gut Punch offers an unflinching look at his personal struggles with mental health. In the first verse, he candidly sings:

"How did I get so good at being mean to myself? / I should turn the heat down, tell myself to chill out / Damn, I really hate the way I talk to myself."

The second verse dives deeper, revealing the pressures of perfectionism and people-pleasing:

"When the hell did I start trying to be perfect? / And people-pleasing, is it ever really worth it? / Fake-smiling just to pass the time, it's the only way I've been getting by / Looked at myself and I can't even recognize / Who I am behind those eyes, one big disguise."

Jonas, who lives with type 1 diabetes, has long been open about the emotional toll of managing his condition. In a 2021 interview with PEOPLE, he highlighted the importance of mental health for those with chronic illnesses.

“I certainly speak to my therapist… and luckily, I've got a really good support system around me and a great set of doctors,” he said. “What needs awareness is the mental and emotional impacts that it has not only just on the individual that's affected by the disease, but also by the friends and family and loved ones.”
