Jeff Daniels Sent the Internet Into a Frenzy With His ‘Finger-Licking Good’ Sandwich Recipe

Ryan Brennan | March 4, 2026

Jeff Daniels went on late-night TV, described the most chaotic sandwich recipe imaginable, and now your grocery store might be running low on Ruffles.

Here’s how a pita bread, peanut butter and barbecue sauce combo became the internet’s latest obsession.

The Late-Night Moment That Broke the Internet

It happened during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Feb. 19.

Daniels sat down for “The Colbert Questionert,” a recurring 15-question rapid-fire segment, and the very first question — “What is the best sandwich?” — set the whole thing off.

Daniels didn’t hesitate. He described his “personal favorite,” which goes like this:

A circular pita bread (without an air pocket), a quarter-inch layer of creamy peanut butter on half of it, crushed Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream chips, a layer of your favorite barbecue sauce, then fold it over and eat.

He delivered the whole recipe with a straight face that completely baffled Colbert and his audience.

“It could be my three favorite tastes,” he said. “It’s like visiting three countries at once. And they’re all in your mouth.”

“It’s fun to eat in front of other people, too,” he joked.

The clip spread everywhere, fast. And then people actually started making it.

Thousands of People Tried It — With Mixed Results

In the two weeks after the clip went viral, people across the country rushed to their pantries to throw the sandwich together.

Social media filled up with real-time reactions, and the verdict was genuinely split. Some loved it. Others didn’t have the palate for it.

Today author and registered dietitian Heather Martin “laughed out loud with the first bite” before describing it as “finger-licking good.”

When a registered dietitian co-signs a peanut butter and barbecue sauce sandwich, something is working.

Here’s the best part: Daniels himself was caught completely off guard. In an interview with The Detroit News, published March 2, Daniels revealed he was just as baffled by the response online as people were about his favorite sandwich.

“I’m not a foodie but I am a connoisseur of things that taste good,” he told the outlet in an email, adding that he was “stunned” by the reactions.

The ‘Sweet Baby’ Mix-Up That Made Everything Better

If you watched the original Colbert clip closely, you might have caught a hilarious flub.

During the interview, Daniels accidentally referred to the BBQ sauce brand as “Sweet Baby James” — mixing up Sweet Baby Ray’s with something that sounds a lot more like a James Taylor album than a condiment.

He leaned right into it in his interview with The Detroit News:

“As for Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce, I always thought if it was good enough for James Taylor to write a song about it, it was good enough for me. I have since learned to finish reading labels,” he told the outlet.

The man confused a barbecue sauce with a folk music legend and turned it into a punchline.

As for the Ruffles, they appear to be a favorite of his.

“As a kid, I believed Jif peanut butter was named after me. Whenever I open a bag of Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream potato chips, I tend to eat more than just one,” he added.

The Origin Story Behind Jeff Daniels’ Sandwich

The origin story is just as chaotic as the sandwich itself.

Daniels was home one day and wanted to make a PB&J with a piece of pita bread. He only had crumbs of chips at the bottom of the Ruffles bag, so those joined.

When he opened the refrigerator, he realized he was out of jelly. So he chose BBQ sauce instead.

The sandwich that launched a thousand TikToks was born out of not having jelly.

“I squirted the smoky syrup over the peanut butter and chips, folded over the pita, and took a bite. I loved it so much, I offered to make it for the family,” he told The Detroit News.

“They promptly ordered pizza,” he joked.

His family’s reaction might be the most relatable part of this entire story.
