Taylor Swift’s father ‘feeling fantastic’ after undergoing bypass heart surgery

Ryan Brennan | July 17, 2025

Taylor Swift’s father, Scott Swift, is on the mend.

The 73-year-old, who has been one of his daughter’s biggest fans throughout her career, underwent quintuple bypass surgery more than one month ago, according to a report by TMZ, published July 16.

TMZ further clarified that Scott Swift is “feeling fantastic” as he continues to recover.

Quintuple bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is “a procedure to restore blood flow to areas of your heart,” according to the Cleveland Clinic

The “quintuple” in the name means Scott Swift needed to treat five severely blocked major arteries.

According to TMZ, Scott Swift’s procedure was recommended by his doctor who “saw something” after a routine check-up. It was not, however, a result of a heart attack.

TMZ described the procedure as a “complex” one, but added that Scott Swift is “feeling just great.”

"The surgery [often] involves taking a healthy blood vessel from the chest or leg area,” according to the Mayo Clinic. The vessel is then connected to the blocked artery to create a new path for blood flow.

Taylor Swift, her brother Austin Swift and their mother, Andrea Swift, were reportedly by Scott Swift’s side throughout the surgery and ongoing recovery process, per TMZ.

Scott and Andrea Swift have been married for 37 years, according to People

The couple tied the knot in 1988 before welcoming their first child — a daughter named Taylor — the following year. Her younger brother followed in 1992.

Taylor Swift has previously opened up about her parents’ health

Scott Smith’s surgery comes more than six years after Taylor Swift penned an essay for “Elle” titled, “30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30.”

The 24th item on that list was “how to handle serious illness in my family.”

As she explained in the essay, both Taylor Swift’s father and mother have had cancer — and her mom “is now fighting her battle with it again.”

“It’s taught me that there are real problems and then there’s everything else,” she wrote, per Elle.

“My mom’s cancer is a real problem. I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress, and prayers to real problems now,” she added.

In 2008, Taylor Swift released her second studio album titled “Fearless,” which featured a track called “The Best Day” — a song she dedicated to her mother, according to UDaily

“And now I know why the all the trees change in the fall / I know you were on my side / Even when I was wrong / And I love you for giving me your eyes / Staying back and watching me shine,” she sings, per Genius

“And I didn't know if you knew / So I'm taking this chance to say / That I had the best day with you today,” she continues.

Taylor Swift also mentioned her father and little brother in the song.
