Viral TikTok Frozen Egg Trend Poses Serious Salmonella Risk to Kids, Agencies Warn

Hanna Wickes | April 24, 2026

If your child spends time on TikTok, there’s a good chance they’ve come across the “mini egg” hack — and it looks like exactly the kind of thing a kid would want to try. Whole eggs get tossed in the freezer, sliced in half while still frozen and fried into tiny, photo-worthy portions. The viral egg trend has racked up millions of views across multiple waves on the platform, but the FDA and USDA are warning that this hack is dangerous, especially for children.

Here’s what parents need to know — and how your family can still experiment with frozen eggs safely.

Why This Trend Keeps Showing Up on Your Kid’s Feed

The TikTok videos are visually satisfying and deceptively simple. Users freeze whole eggs in their shells, then slice them open and drop the frozen discs into a pan. The result — cute, perfectly portioned mini fried eggs — is the kind of content that performs well with younger audiences who love food hacks.

The trend has resurfaced on the platform after gaining millions of views in earlier waves. That means it’s not a one-time thing your kid might have missed. It has circulated multiple times, which increases the chance your teen or tween has already seen it — or tried it.

Some of the viral TikTok videos show eggs coming out of freezers visibly cracked before being sliced and cooked. Commenters on the platform have raised concerns, with some referencing past versions of the trend and warning about earlier reports of food poisoning linked to similar behavior.

What the FDA and USDA Say

The FDA and USDA caution against freezing eggs in their shells. Their guidance explains that liquids expand when frozen, which can cause eggshells to crack. Even when cracks are not visible, they can compromise the egg’s protective barrier and allow bacteria to enter.

The agencies also note that freezing does not kill bacteria already present. As a result, contaminated eggs may lead to foodborne illness, including salmonella.

Why Kids Are Especially at Risk

“Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis,” per the FDA. While some individuals may not develop symptoms, others can become seriously ill.

Children are among the vulnerable groups most at risk for serious complications. The FDA identifies children, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems as particularly susceptible. Because of this, officials warn that the TikTok “mini fried egg” trend is especially unsafe for kids.

That’s worth a direct conversation. If your child has seen this trend — or already tried it — they need to understand that the cute presentation doesn’t mean the food is safe.

The Safe Way to Freeze Eggs at Home

The good news is that eggs can be frozen safely. They just can’t be frozen in their shells.

The FDA recommends cracking eggs first and freezing them in a freezer-safe container, either as scrambled whole eggs or separated whites. Frozen eggs should be used within one year.

To prepare them, they should be thawed in the refrigerator overnight and cooked immediately afterward. Thawing at room temperature is not recommended.

USDA guidance states that eggs should be cooked until both yolks and whites are firm to reduce the risk of salmonella. Vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant people, elderly individuals and immunocompromised people are advised to avoid runny or undercooked eggs altogether.

If your kid is interested in trying fun egg shapes or portion sizes, using the proper freezing method first removes the food safety risk while still letting them get creative in the kitchen.

The trend has circulated multiple times on TikTok, which means it could show up on your child’s feed again at any point. Knowing the risks ahead of time gives your family a head start.
