The Buffalo Bills have turned to a familiar face to guide their franchise into a new era. On Tuesday, January 27, the team agreed to terms with Joe Brady on a five-year contract, making him the next head coach of the Bills following the departure of Sean McDermott.

For Bills fans who have watched this organization grow over the past several years, Brady’s promotion represents both continuity and change—a chance to build on what’s been working while reaching for something more. Here’s everything you need to know about the man now steering the ship in Buffalo.

A Historic Hire: The NFL’s Youngest Head Coach

At just 36 years old, Brady is set to be the youngest NFL head coach in 2026, according to SportingNews.Com. He will turn 37 in September, making him part of a new generation of offensive-minded coaches reshaping how football is played at the highest level.

Brady’s youth isn’t just a number—it represents a modern approach to the game that has already produced remarkable results in Buffalo.

From Quarterbacks Coach to the Top Job: Brady’s Buffalo Journey

Brady’s path to becoming head coach is a testament to his growth within the Bills organization.

Brady was originally hired as the team’s quarterbacks coach, a role that put him in direct contact with the franchise’s most important player. His work in that position caught the attention of the organization’s leadership, and when the Bills needed to make a change at offensive coordinator, Brady was ready.
He replaced Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator on an interim basis in 2023, stepping into a high-pressure situation and delivering results. That performance earned him the full-time offensive coordinator position ahead of the 2024 season, a role he held for the past two years before his elevation to head coach.

This gradual progression through the coaching ranks in Buffalo means Brady understands the organization’s culture, knows the roster intimately, and has already built the relationships necessary to lead effectively from day one.

The Josh Allen Connection: A Partnership Built on Trust

Perhaps no aspect of Brady’s tenure in Buffalo matters more than his relationship with quarterback Josh Allen. Since joining the Bills in 2022 as the quarterbacks coach, Brady has developed a close bond with the face of the franchise.

“Love him like a brother,” Allen said of Brady in 2025, per Sports Illustrated. “He’s been awesome for my career.”

That mutual trust was on full display during Brady’s introductory press conference on Thursday, January 29, where the new head coach made one thing abundantly clear: It’s all about Josh Allen.

Brady stressed that his job, taking over for Sean McDermott, is to get Allen and the Bills to the next level.

“He is the leader of this organization, and the weight that he has on his shoulders is something that I can’t even imagine,” Brady said, via NFL. "Josh Allen is the best player in the NFL, and I have to grow. Part of me growing is that it’s going to allow him to be a better version of himself. I’m so excited to be able to continue this journey with him. I have so much love for that man right here, and all I want is for him to get everything that he deserves. I’m going to do everything I can to get him what he deserves.”

Brady isn’t positioning himself as the star of the show—he’s making clear that his success will be measured by Allen’s success, and ultimately, by the team’s success.

The Numbers Don’t Lie: An Elite Offensive Track Record

Brady’s credentials extend far beyond his relationship with the quarterback. His offense has ranked among the best in the NFL, according to the Bills.

Since becoming Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, the Bills averaged 29.6 points per game (2nd), 367.7 total yards per game (3rd), 145.4 rushing yards per game (3rd) and 222.3 passing yards per game (10th).

Those traditional statistics tell a compelling story, but the advanced metrics paint an even more impressive picture. The Bills rank 1st in EPA/play, 2nd in success rate, 2nd in EPA/dropback and 1st in EPA/rush since 2024.

For those unfamiliar with these statistics, EPA stands for Expected Points Added, a metric that measures how much each play contributes to a team’s scoring potential. Ranking first in EPA/play and EPA/rush means Brady’s offense has been the most efficient in the league at creating scoring opportunities.

The individual accolades earned under Brady’s guidance speak volumes as well. In 2024, Brady helped coach Josh Allen to his first MVP award and was an AP Assistant Coach of the Year Finalist. A year later, running back James Cook III won the NFL rushing title in Brady’s offense, demonstrating that the system creates opportunities for multiple players to excel.

A Family Man With Buffalo Roots

Beyond the Xs and Os, Brady has built a life in Buffalo. He is married to his wife, Lauren, and they have two children: a son (born April 2023), and a daughter (born December 2025).

Following the birth of his daughter, Allen gave Brady a game ball aftrer the team’s 26-7 win over the Steelers in Week 13 after learning that his wife gave birth to their daughter the day of the game.

“We got two kids born in Buffalo, and so they’ll be proud of that their whole life,” Brady said.
Brady flew back home with the team from Pittsburgh, went home and saw his newborn baby girl.

“A lot of energy when I got back, when I got home last night, I got to meet my daughter,” Brady said on Dec. 1.

That moment captures something essential about who Joe Brady is—a coach fully invested in his work, but also a family man whose roots in Buffalo run deep.

A New Era After McDermott

Brady’s promotion comes after a significant change in the organization’s leadership. Previous head coach Sean McDermott was with the team from 2017 to January 2026, and it was quite the shock when it was announced he was fired shortly after the Bills loss to the Broncos on Saturday, January 17, in the divisional round of the playoffs.

McDermott’s departure marked the end of an era that brought sustained success to Buffalo but ultimately fell short of the ultimate goal. Now, the organization has entrusted that mission to Brady, betting that his offensive expertise, his relationship with Allen, and his understanding of the team’s culture will be the combination that finally pushes the Bills over the top.

For Bills fans, the Brady era begins with hope, familiarity, and the belief that the best may still be yet to come.
