“Oh and this happened yesterday!”
The 4th of July has always been a special holiday for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
The royal couple, who enjoyed their second date on July 4, 2016, tied the knot in 2019 and have since welcomed two children together — Prince Archie, born in 2019, and Princess Lilibet, born in 2021.
While a lot has changed since that second date, one adorable tradition remains the same.

On July 4, the Duchess of Sussex took to Instagram to share three photos in honor of Independence Day — two of which featured red, white and blue-decorated cupcakes.
In the caption, Markle recalled a memory from her second date with Harry nine years prior.
“Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate,” she wrote. “Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition.”
“May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes,” she concluded in the caption.
According to People, the photo in the second slide was taken on the couple’s second date in 2016. The photo was originally shared in the couple’s 2022 Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan.”
But cupcakes weren’t the only food the couple enjoyed for this year’s celebration.
Also on July 4, Markle took to her lifestyle brand As Ever’s Instagram account to share a video of her assembling an Independence Day-inspired charcuterie board.
“Easy entertaining. Happy 4th of July!” she wrote in a text overlay at the beginning of the video.
Markle also took to her Instagram Stories to share a festive recipe for a “4th of July Cocktail Hour,” fit with raspberries, ice, gin, tonic, blueberries, mint, strawberries and good company.
Prince Harry previously opened up about his and Markle’s second date
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about the well-documented second date between Markle and Harry.
Amidst all the family drama in his 2023 memoir, “Spare,” Harry wrote about the couple’s origin story and how the cupcake-infused 4th of July tradition came to be.
The Duke of Sussex recalled seeing his now-wife pop up in a Snapchat video with a mutual friend named Violet when he asked her to introduce him to the “Suits” star.
The pair eventually met for their first date at Soto House in London on July 3, but Harry showed up late.
To make up for his tardiness, Harry brought Markle a sweet gift to their second date the following night.
"She walked in, wearing a pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes. She was aglow. I stood and said: I bear gifts. A pink box. I held it forward. She shook it. What’s this?” he wrote in the memoir, per People.
“She opened the box. Cupcakes. Red, white and blue cupcakes, to be exact. In honor of Independence Day,” he added.
As for how Markle reacted to the cupcakes, Harry wrote that she said they “looked amazing.”
“Again the conversation flowed, crackled. Burgers came and went, uneaten. I felt an overwhelming sense of Overture, Prelude, Kettle Drums, Act I,” he continued in the book.
“And yet also a sense of ending. A phase of my life — the first half? — was coming to a close,” he added.
Harry then invited Markle to Botswana for a third date, where the pair got to know each other “before the rest of the world, before the media sort of, you know, joined it,” as Harry explained, per People.
