“It’s just a special way for me to get involved.”
Teddi Mellencamp is opening up about another traumatic experience that hit close to home.
The 44-year-old reality TV star and podcaster, who is currently receiving treatment for stage 4 melanoma, took to Instagram on July 22 to share a video of three masked intruders trying to break into her home.
In the caption, she clarified that “everyone is unharmed,” but her family was left “shaken” as a result.

“We are fortunate to have the latest in home security systems which scared off the intruders. Authorities were alerted and swiftly responded,” Mellencamp explained in the post.
“We appreciate everyone’s heightened concern in light of recent criminal activities in our area, but we are safe,” she added.
The security footage shows three intruders hopping the front gate of her home and walking through a second gate on the side of the house before running away.
According to NBC News, Mellencamp was home with her estranged husband, Edwin Arroyave, and their three kids — Slate, 12, Cruz, 10, and Dove, 5.
Arroyave’s other daughter, Isabella, from a previous relationship, was also in the home, per NBC News.
"By the time we came down, they had already ran out," Arroyave said in an interview with the outlet. "But I just saw, obviously, the doors open at the house and stuff."
A Los Angeles police spokesperson later confirmed that “a neighbor's house was burglarized” prior to the incident, according to NBC News.
"You really don't see anything because they have hoods, fully covered, gloves," Arroyave added. "I mean, they're professionals at what they do and stuff, although these seem pretty young."
Mellencamp provides update in new podcast episode
Later that day, Mellencamp took to her “Two Ts In A Pod” podcast to shed light on the trauma that ensued.
She began by prefacing that the Los Angeles area she lives in has been hit with a lot of break-ins recently, so she — and her community as a whole — have been “diligent” about fortifying their homes.
“It can be a scary time, so you have to be diligent with your family or kids,” Mellencamp explained.
What seemed to be just another night turned south when the family heard noises outside. They were further alarmed when their security camera went off — at which point they heard several people running.
Police officers arrived on the scene just a few minutes after Arroyave called 911.
Mellencamp went on to clarify that Arroyave sometimes stays in a guest room downstairs to help with the kids and to ensure she’s not alone as she continues her cancer treatment.
“This is one of those moments I am beyond grateful,” she said.
Once police officers arrived, they checked every room of the house to ensure no one snuck in.
“Thankfully, we were all safe and good, but we’re kind of — we’re shaken up around here,” she said, later adding that she has avoided leaving the house in the days since out of fear.
Mellencamp used her experience as a warning to homeowners everywhere.
“Guys, you have to set your security systems, you have to make sure that all your doors are closed, you have to make sure that you do all these things now more than ever,” she pleaded.
She also clapped back at some of her haters online who claim that she’s just seeking attention.

“Nobody in their right mind would do this on purpose,” she said on the podcast. “It’s hurtful. We’re all scared.”
