Michael Sherman Jr. and his family have been dreaming of having a baby girl for 108 years — but to no avail.
According to Fox26, the last female to carry the Sherman name was Michael’s great-great aunt Orah Belle Sherman, who was born in 1917.
The family, who reside in Atlanta, have exclusively welcomed baby boys in the years since.
Michael, a Montgomery County firefighter, and his wife, Joacquia Sherman, kept that streak alive when they welcomed their first child — a son named Mekhai — five years ago.

Now five years later, Michael and Joacquia are expecting their second baby.
But unlike their previous gender reveal — and the years of gender reveals that preceded it — the couple learned on Sept. 7 that they’re finally bringing their family’s longstanding streak to an end.
That’s right. Michael and Joacquia are expecting a baby girl.
“I just feel honored that finally, we are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world – finally, after over 100 years. It’s amazing,” the soon-to-be girl dad told KTRK in an interview, published Sept. 9.

"I never thought this day would come — to be the first ‘girl dad’ in more than a century is humbling and exciting," he added in an interview with Fox26, published Sept. 8.
Michael’s wife shared a similar sentiment with Fox26.
"This is so much bigger than us. Our daughter will always know she’s part of something extraordinary, and we’re just grateful for this blessing," Joacquia told the outlet.
The Sherman family is overjoyed to be having a baby girl
While talking to KTRK, Michael’s father described the gender reveal as a “monumental thing.”
“I have three boys. My dad had two boys. His brother had two boys. So, it’s never been nothing but boys, boys, boys,” Michael Sherman Sr. said.
The family was quick to recall the history that the baby girl is being born into.
“She was a trailblazer in Atlanta. Yes, she dealt with the civil rights,” Lydia Robertson, the baby’s great grandmother, told KTRK. She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta.”

Robertson knows that the incoming baby will be surrounded by a family ready to support her.
“I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her… She’s going to always have support here for us, and I pray she makes the right decisions in life and takes the right path," she said.
According to ABC13, the baby girl is due in March 2026.
“She’s going to know that she made history in the Sherman family,” grandmother Chantene Newman added, per KTRK.

All that’s left for the Sherman family is to see if their 108-year streak is worthy of recognition from the Guinness World Records — something the family is actively pursuing, per ABC13.
