JFK’s granddaughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, given less than a year to live after cancer diagnosis

Ryan Brennan | November 23, 2025

JFK’s granddaughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, is opening up about her terminal cancer diagnosis for the first time.

In a deeply personal essay published Saturday in “The New Yorker,” the 35-year-old journalist shared that she was diagnosed last year with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.

The diagnosis came in the days after she gave birth to her second child — a baby girl — in May 2024.

“My husband, George, and I held her and stared at her and admired her newness. A few hours later, my doctor noticed that my blood count looked strange,” Schlossberg wrote in the essay.

Despite initial thoughts that it might be something related to pregnancy,” doctors later confirmed that it was AML with a rare mutation called Inversion 3. She has since been given less than a year to live.

“I did not—could not—believe that they were talking about me,” she wrote. “I wasn’t sick. I didn’t feel sick.”

“I was actually one of the healthiest people I knew,” she continued. “I once swam three miles across the Hudson River—eerily, to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.”

Schlossberg —  who also shares a 3-year-old son with her husband, George Moran — is the second daughter of former US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy and designer Edwin Schlossberg, per USA Today

Caroline Kennedy is the only surviving child of former president John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

According to Schlossberg, her husband and two kids have since moved into her parents’ apartment.

Her brother, Jack, and sister, Rose, have also helped raise her two kids as her family has bombarded her with love — often “sitting in my various hospital rooms almost every day for the last year and a half.”

Schlossberg went on to praise her family for their support — especially her husband.

“He would go home to put our kids to bed and come back to bring me dinner,” she said of George.

“He is perfect, and I feel so cheated and so sad that I don’t get to keep living the wonderful life I had with this kind, funny, handsome genius I managed to find,” she continued.

She opened up about the guilt she feels knowing that her death will add to her family’s history of tragedy.

“For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry,” Schlossberg wrote.

“Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family’s life, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it,” she added.

Now that doctors have given her less than a year to live, Schlossberg is holding on to whatever memories she has left.

“When you are dying, at least in my limited experience, you start remembering everything. Images come in flashes—people and places and stray conversations—and refuse to stop,” she wrote.

“Maybe my brain is replaying my life now because I have a terminal diagnosis, and all these memories will be lost,” she continued. “Maybe it’s because I don’t have much time to make new ones.”
