Max Greenfield is mourning the loss of his adorable pooch.
The 45-year-old “New Girl” star proudly adopted a rescue dog, Darlene, with his casting director wife, Tess Sanchez, in 2023 after the pit bull mix spent more than a year in a Los Angeles shelter.
On June 22, nearly three years after they brought the dog home for the first time, Sanchez took to Instagram to share that Darlene had “passed on to heaven.”

“Cancer with her advanced age was too big a battle for her to fight,” Sanchez revealed in the caption.
The post featured a series of photos and videos of Darlene, including a photo of Darlene laying on Greenfield’s chest and a video of Darlene giving Sanchez a hug.
Another photo showed Darlene sitting next to the couple’s 9-year-old son, Ozzie James.
“She sprinkled so much love and magic into our lives,” Sanchez added in the caption. “I take comfort in knowing we gave her the best last chapter and that she experienced being truly loved and cared for.”
Greenfield and Sanchez met at a bar in Hollywood before the two found success in the industry.
“When we met, we both were broke, but with a total drive of what we each wanted to do. We started at the same place, and we built our life together at the same pace,” Sanchez told Glamour in March.
The couple tied the knot in 2008 and welcomed daughter Lilly in 2010, followed by Ozzie in 2015.
Darlene spent 400 days in a shelter before Greenfield adopted her
In July 2023, Greenfield took to Instagram to share a photo of him and his wife cuddling up with their new pup in the grass. He captioned the photo: “Meet Darlene.”
Several days later, the shelter they found Darlene at took to Instagram to post their goodbye.
“We are thrilled to share that after 400 days (!!) in our care our beautiful girl Darlin has found her forever home with one of our favorite rescue advocates,” Wags and Walks wrote in the caption.
According to the shelter, Greenfield and Sanchez described Darlene as a “million dollar dog.”
“We knew she was the one the first day we brought her home,” the couple said at the time, per Wags and Walks.
Many of the couple’s fans, friends and colleagues — including Wags and Walks — sent their condolences to the couple in the comment section of Sanchez’s June 22 Instagram post.
“Sending you all so much love! Thank you for giving her the dream life,” Wags and Walks commented.
“Sweet girl, you will be missed! Especially all the piggy noises you made, always made me laugh,” family friend Ashley Jeanne wrote.
Even PETA sent a heartfelt comment the couple’s way.
“We are so sorry for the loss of your sweet Darlene. Her final chapter was filled with the love and joy she so deeply deserved, and the memories you shared will live on in your hearts,” PETA wrote.
