There are two types of candies come spooky season — those we keep and those we trade.
Whether you’re a trick-or-treater looking to maximize your stockpile or an adult scoping out your kids’ stash for a midnight snack, nothing’s more synonymous (or sweeter) with Halloween than candy.
But, if you had to take your pick, what would you say is the most popular Halloween candy in the U.S.?
If you answered Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, then you were correct.

While we’re all entitled to our own opinion, recent data released by Instacart and DoorDash suggests that we all have a similar sweet tooth once Halloween rolls around — with chocolate leading the way.
According to Instacart, the top-10 most popular Halloween candies in the U.S. include:
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- Peanut M&M’s
- M&M’s
- Kit Kat
- Snickers
- Sour Patch Kids
- Hershey’s Milk Chocolate
- Milky Way
- Twix
- HARIBO Goldbears
DoorDash’s list is fairly similar, with a few exceptions:
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- M&M’s
- Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar
- Snickers
- Skittles
- Nerds
- Sour Patch Kids
- Twix
- Kit Kat
- Airheads
Other candies that are growing in popularity include Warheads, Lemonheads, Baby Bottle Pop, Dum-Dums, Bit-O-Honey, Necco Wafers and Hershey’s Cookies ‘N’ Creme, according to DoorDash.
“We’re seeing a real revival of comfort classics this Halloween,” said Cristen Milliner, Consumer Trends Expert at DoorDash.

“The resurgence of items like grandma candy and Baby Bottle Pop shows how different generations might be finding joy in the same classics, just in their own way,” she added.

What is the most popular Halloween candy in each state?
If you live in Indiana, Kentucky, Nevada, Ohio or West Virginia, then your sweet tooth coincides with the national average, according to Instacart.
That’s because the most popular candy on Halloween in your state is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
But some states have some rather unique favorites — like Maine and Oklahoma, which prefer Tootsie Pops, and Arizona and Wyoming, which prefer Tootsie Rolls.
Florida stands alone in their love for 3 Musketeers, while Alaska opts for the Hi-Chew.

Overall, 96% of households plan on buying candy and Americans are expected to spend around $3.9 billion on candy this Halloween season, according to the National Retail Federation, per USA Today.
But perhaps no state in the U.S. has a bigger sweet tooth than Utah.

According to Instacart, “Utah has once again decisively claimed the crown, buying candy 50% more often than the national average in October 2024.”
The Mountain West and Midwest dominated the ranks, while California, Texas and the entire East coast paled in comparison.
