A South Carolina family’s spooky Halloween setup is so realistic it’s sparking 911 calls

Ryan Brennan | October 20, 2025

You probably see plenty of houses with Halloween decorations on your way home from work each day.

But you likely haven't seen many houses with Halloween decor this realistic.

On Oct. 3, South Carolina homeowners Amanda Riggins Peden and Sam Lee took to Facebook to share a video of their uber realistic Halloween decorations — and it came with a spooky warning.

“Our house will be on fire (not real fire) as Halloween decorations every night from 8-10PM between now and October 31,” Peden wrote in the caption.

“Please do not call the fire department again!” she added.

The house, which is located at 512 N Main St. in Fountain Inn, for anyone who would like to see the display in person, according to the post, has since gone viral for its display of (fake) smoke seeping through the windows — which are lit up to resemble a burning fire.

And this isn’t the first year they’ve sparked controversy with their outdoor Halloween decor.

In an interview with NBC News, published on Oct. 10, Peden and Lee revealed that their decorations resulted in several dozen 911 calls last year — and a few more this year.

And while most people share positive feedback, some people think the decorations are extreme.

“Probably 99% has been positive,” she told NBC News. “We do have a 1% that don’t like it and that’s understandable. They’re entitled to their opinion, but we do it for the community.”

Luckily, the local fire department was aware of the decorations ahead of time — so no harm, no foul.

The couple’s Halloween decorations are shining the light on fire safety awareness

It might be one of the most over-the-top Halloween decoration ideas, but Peden and Lee are making the most of it.

On Oct. 8, Peden returned to Facebook to share a photo of several fire trucks parked in their driveway — but assured her followers that the “Fire Dept is NOT here for a call to the fire house.”

Instead, the couple were partnering with the Fountain Inn Fire Dept and American Red Cross for National Fire Prevention Week — which took place between Oct. 5 and Oct. 11.

In a video posted by the American Red Cross of South Carolina, firefighters shared a few basic fire safety tips in front of the couple’s home.

That includes making sure you have several safety exits out of your home, closing your door before you go to sleep and making sure you have a plan in place for when a fire occurs.

Firefighters also stressed the importance of having a smoke alarm in every bedroom of the home.

According to the National Retail Federation, 73% of households plan on celebrating Halloween in some way, but only half of them plan on decorating their home.
