Sarah Michelle Gellar sparks heated parenting debate after giving daughter expensive birthday gift

Ryan Brennan | September 23, 2025

Sarah Michelle Gellar went the extra mile for her daughter’s 16th birthday gift.

The 48-year-old actress, best known for her role as Buffy Summers in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” took to Instagram on Sept. 19 to post a thoughtful tribute in honor of her daughter’s milestone birthday

She opened up about the mother-daughter duo’s relationship in the caption.

“16 years ago today, you made me a mom. I believe the quote is … a daughter is just a little girl who grows up to be your best friend,” Gellar wrote. “Charlotte, you are that and so much more.”

“You are strong, you are inspiring, you are kind, you are funny (almost as funny as me),” she continued. “And most importantly you are one of a kind, the best kind. Im so lucky to call you my best friend.”

The post included several photos of the pair when Charlotte was younger, as well as a photo of the expensive sweet 16 gift her daughter received — a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

“And I’m equally excited to finally be your passenger PRINZEss,” Gellar added in the caption.

Gellar shares daughter Charlotte and son Rocky, 13, with her husband and fellow actor Freddie Prinze Jr., according to People

Gellar returned to Instagram several days later to joke that the expensive gift was just as much a present for her as it was for her daughter.

“I would like to use this to officially announce my retirement… As a teen uber driver,” she wrote in a Sept. 22 Instagram Story

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s 16th birthday gift left the internet in shambles

Gellar was delighted to give her daughter a flashy new car for her birthday, but some of her fans weren’t.

While some fans criticized her for the choice of car — being brand new and a “gas guzzler” — others were disappointed that she’s not teaching her daughter how to work and earn for herself.

“Great way to show her how she (doesn’t) have to work and earn. It will greatly help her in life,” one fan wrote in the comment section.

“Really great choice of first car for the planet.. go burn loads of fuel on roads with your off road 4x4!” another fan wrote.

“Can we stop normalizing gifting cars,” a third fan commented.

“Does a 16 year old really need to be gifted a Jeep, of all cars?” another fan asked. “It's disappointing when the wealthy don't teach their offspring the value of money and hard work.”

Other fans were quick to defend Gellar’s Sweet 16 gift — telling commenters to mind their own business.

“OMG! why are so many people in their feels about parents buying their child a car?” one fan wrote. “I turned 16 and got a brand new car but also had to work and have my own gas money.”

“You bought her a safe, rugged vehicle!! Good job mom!!” another fan commented.

“We need to normalize not being petty and jealous that someone has what you don’t!” a third fan wrote.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. met in 1997 while filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” per People. Gellar was cast as Helen Shivers, while Prinze Jr. played Ray Bronson.

Their friendship took a romantic turn in 2000 when they were supposed to meet a mutual friend for dinner, per Instagram. That friend missed her flight and couldn’t make it, but Gellar and Prinze still showed up.

They got engaged one year later, and tied the knot in September 2002. Charlotte was born on Sept. 19, 2009, while Rocky was born on Sept. 20, 2012.

Gellar and Prinze have worked together on numerous projects over the years.
