In honor of National Tooth Fairy Day, we’re revealing some of our favorite Tooth Fairy ideas to help make losing teeth a little more fun for kids everywhere.
But first, let’s talk about the history behind this special day — and the decades-long tradition it coincides with.
According to the National Day Calendar, National Tooth Fairy Day is celebrated on Feb. 28 and Aug. 22 each year as a way of honoring one of dental care’s hardest-working helpers.

The day is meant to celebrate this whimsical part of childhood and the role the Tooth Fairy plays in making the experience of losing teeth exciting rather than scary for kids.
But the history behind this tradition is one of America’s biggest mysteries.
According to Forbes, the Tooth Fairy as we know it today was largely popularized in the 1920s with the re-release of a popular 18th century French fairy tale called “La Bonne Petite Souris.”
In the story, a mouse (who doubles as a fairy) saves a queen from a bad king by knocking his teeth out and placing the teeth under his pillow.
From there, the legend of the Tooth Fairy grew — and parents everywhere have helped keep it alive.
Tooth Fairy ideas and Tooth Fairy gifts that kids will love

Today, the Tooth Fairy tradition is simple. When a kid loses a tooth, they place the tooth under their pillow for the Tooth Fairy to find late at night. In return, the Tooth Fairy leaves a small gift.
Traditionally, that gift was some form of money — whether it be a quarter or dollar bill.
According to Delta Dental’s 2025 Original Tooth Fairy Poll®, “the average value of a single lost tooth during the past year declined by 14% from $5.84 to $5.01.”
“Further, the Tooth Fairy is scaling back on additional gifts, with just 1 in 6 children (16%) receiving both money and something else compared to 21% in 2024,” Delta Dental added.
But in the age of social media, some parents are sharing their unique and creative Tooth Fairy ideas with the world — including letters from the “actual” Tooth Fairy and custom boxes to place the tooth in.
Here are some of our favorite Tooth fairy gifts and Tooth Fairy ideas to make this tradition extra special!
Create a grand entrance for the Tooth Fairy
The Tooth Fairy needs her own magical door to enter through and exit out of when collecting the teeth – so why not make it a fun arts and crafts project?
It’s the perfect way to introduce the tradition in the days (or weeks) leading up to your child’s first lost tooth and is an even better way to spend some quality time with your child.
@thermalandoaks Links are in the blue link my bio. She lost her very first tooth and we made it magical! 🧚♀️✨ This tiny fairy door made the perfect entrance for the tooth fairy to sneak in and leave a little surprise. Watching her excitement made the whole thing unforgettable. If your toddler is starting to lose teeth, this is such a sweet way to mark the moment and yes, the fairy dust was everywhere! 💫 #ToddlerMomMagic #ToothFairyIdeas #FirstLostTooth #ToddlerMilestones #FairyDoorMagic #ToothFairyTradition #MagicalMoments #MomLifeHacks #ToddlerLife #KidsToothFairyIdeas #FairyDoorDecor #LosingTeethIsMagical #MomHack #WhimsicalParenting #CreativeMomIdeas #CuteToothFairySetup #toddlermom ♬ original sound - Christina ✨ Homesteading
You can put the door anywhere, but we love the idea of putting it on the trim of their bedroom wall (kind of like a mouse door). The door can be as small as four inches or as big as two feet – let your child decide!
Craft a box for future Tooth Fairy gifts
This is another excellent way to introduce your child to the Tooth Fairy tradition.
Before they lose their first tooth, have your child create a tiny box (like a treasure chest) big enough to fit their tooth and a small gift — but not too big that it overwhelms the tiny Tooth Fairy!
@richellehedlund I’m surprised she wanted it blue… I’m going to make another pink one with some embellishments 🩷 You can personalize it anyway you want, love it!! #easydiy #toothfairy #cheapdiy #momsoftiktok #thoughtfulgifts ♬ original sound - richellehedlund
The box can then be re-used every time your child loses a tooth and can even turn into a special keepsake for the parent when all their baby teeth are gone.
If not a box, craft a special Tooth Fairy pillow
One of the biggest issues with having your child place their tooth under the pillow is trying to find that tooth late at night without waking up your child.
But why go through the trouble when you can make a second pillow exclusively for the Tooth Fairy — which can then be placed on a nightstand or on the ground next to the Tooth Fairy’s grand entrance.

You can also hang it from the side of their bed or even hang it from the doorknob to their room.
It doesn’t have to be a large pillow, but make sure it has a special pocket for the tooth to sit in (or the gift box they already made).
A handwritten Tooth Fairy letter
When Christmas rolls around, many parents have their children write Santa Claus a letter — and the kids usually get a return letter shortly after. So, why not follow a similar tradition with the Tooth Fairy?
Helping them write their letter will make for a special bonding moment with your child and give you a keepsake to store for later, but you’ll also get to see their reaction when you read them the response!

And since most kids will lose 20 baby teeth, you can treat the Tooth Fairy like their pen pal to help them through this stage of their life.
Have them write a letter when one gets loose — and they’ll get a Tooth Fairy note in return when it falls out!
Give them Tooth Fairy glitter money
Instead of giving your child a regular dollar bill, give them glitter money instead.
Many parents choose to decorate a real dollar bill with glitter, but you can also print a fake dollar bill to avoid wasting real money. Either way, the idea is to make it look like a dollar the Tooth Fairy would use.
@kaylapeloquin I always spray our tooth fairy money with hairspray and a little glitter to make it extra magical 🦷🧚 My 6 yr old just lost her first tooth so received $5, but the normal rate for teeth is only $1 😜 What’s the going rate in your family??

Glittery hairspray, glitter glue and nail polish are sure to give your money some extra sparkle!
tie the bill with a thin ribbon, attach a small feather, or include a tiny rolled-up "note from the Tooth Fairy" written in special colored ink. Some parents even spray it with perfume to make it smell magical.
Instead of a dollar, give them Tooth Fairy coins
I’m sure we all have some extra change laying around — whether it be in the center console of your car or under a sofa cushion.
Instead of giving your dollar bills a makeover, why not do the same thing with coins?
Start with quarters, half dollars, or even foreign coins for something truly unique. Clean the coins first with soap and water, apply clear nail polish as a base coat, then add fine glitter while the polish is still wet.
@frenchiegocrazy The Tooth Fairy never brought me glitter coins! lol! #toothfairy #glitter #coins #tooth #fyp ♬ im obsessed - husna
For a more elaborate approach, use metallic paint pens to add tiny stars, moons, or tooth symbols around the edges. Add them to their gift box or wrap them in a vintage coin purse for an added touch.
You can also throw in some gold-wrapped chocolate coins — just make sure they brush their teeth afterwards!
Tooth Fairy-themed dental care products
Not all Tooth fairy gifts need to be money-related.
If you don’t like the idea of giving your child a monetary reward, many parents choose to replace it with a small gift basket (a bedazzled basket, of course) filled with dental care items.
@mrskeeks Anybody else cry when their kid lost their first tooth?? 🥲 It’s like a piece of their baby-hood gone 😭 #basket #toothfairy #firsttooth #fyp #foryoupage ♬ Aesthetic - Tollan Kim
Items such as Tooth Fairy-themed toothbrushes, colored floss, flavored toothpaste, and dental care books can turn the experience into an educational opportunity – one that promotes proper dental hygiene.
Other items to include in the gift basket are fairy figurines, crystals or "fairy stones," glow-in-the-dark stickers for their room, or tiny bottles filled with colorful "fairy dust" (fine glitter).
Give them a custom Tooth Fairy wand
There are two primary ways to go about this — and they’re both sure to make your child smile!
The first would be to craft a tiny fairy wand with a Q-tip, glitter, a small ribbon and a small star without your child knowing. And when you enter their room at night, drop the wand by the Tooth Fairy’s door.
When they wake up and see the wand, tell your child the Tooth Fairy must’ve accidentally dropped it without knowing.

From there, you can have them write a letter to the Tooth Fairy letting them know they dropped their wand. In the return letter, have the Tooth Fairy say that they have plenty and they can keep it as a gift.
The second option would be to make or buy a larger wand and simply give it to them as a gift from the Tooth Fairy — without the backstory.
Leave behind an adorable Tooth Fairy receipt
This is a fun idea that allows parents to treat the lost tooth like a normal transaction at the store.
Whether you’re giving them a monetary reward or a small gift, leave behind a receipt from the Tooth Fairy that details the transaction — one baby tooth in exchange for a gift or reward.
Just make sure it’s signed by the Tooth Fairy!
Other cool ideas would be to leave behind small coupons that your child can redeem at a later time — such as “One Free Trip to the Aquarium” — or create a small certificate for each tooth lost.
Have them fill out Tooth Fairy activity sheets
Dental care activity sheets are a fun, interactive, and engaging way to teach your child the nuances of dental care – including brushing and flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist at least twice per year.
Activity sheets can be downloaded off the internet and printed on a piece of paper, but you can also find virtual activity sheets (mobile apps, websites) if your child learns better in front of a digital screen.

Have them fill out the activity sheets before bed or directly after losing their tooth and leave the sheets for the Tooth Fairy.
If your child asks why, tell them that the Tooth Fairy likes to promote good dental habits and this is their way of making sure children learn the importance of brushing and flossing regularly.
Read them a Tooth Fairy bedtime story
Putting the tooth under their pillow is at the heart of every Tooth Fairy tradition, but you can add to that tradition by reading them a Tooth Fairy-inspired bedtime story before they drift off into a dental dream.
Most of these bedtime stories help stress the importance of good dental habits and dental hygiene.
Some of our favorites are Tooth Fairy’s Night by Candice Ransom, How to Catch the Tooth Fairy by Adam Wallace, How to Trick the Tooth Fairy by Erin Danielle, and The Tooth Fairy (Peppa Pig) by Scholastic.

You can also utilize the power of the internet to find Tooth Fairy-inspired or dental-inspired stories online.
For example, you can find a wide range of free bedtime stories about the Tooth Fairy on YouTube — or you can always go the homemade route and make your own!
Voice message from the Tooth Fairy
Sending letters is fun, but you make your child’s relationship with the Tooth Fairy feel a little more realistic and personal with a phone call or voice message.
There are a few mobile apps (such as Call Tooth Fairy Simulator and Call Tooth Fairy Voicemail), but the features aren’t the best and may require in-app purchases.

The more traditional option is to call the Tooth Fairy Hotline, which is available toll-free at 1-833-FAIRY-WA and parents can select from four different messages to customize the experience.
Another fun idea is to have one of your friends or family members act as the Tooth Fairy and leave a personalized message for your child. Just make sure it’s not a voice they would recognize!
Create a baby teeth scrapbook
There’s no better way to celebrate a child’s milestone than with a scrapbook – especially one that you and your child work on together.
You’ll get to spend quality time with your child and have a souvenir for later.

Each page can be dedicated to a different tooth, accompanied by photos, the date it fell out, and even the story behind it—a playful fall, a brave visit to the dentist, or the anticipation of the Tooth Fairy's visit.
It also serves as a gentle introduction to oral health by encouraging them to take pride in their dental milestones (and life milestones, as a whole) and understand the importance of taking care of their teeth.
Custom nightlight to attract the Tooth Fairy
There’s no better way to attract the Tooth Fairy than with a homemade Tooth Fairy nightlight.
It makes for a great bonding experience between you and your child and adds to the tradition by letting them know that they need to have the nightlight on their nightstand if they want the Tooth Fairy to come.
All you need is a mason jar, glow sticks and glitter — meaning it’s an easy but effective craft.
@allthethingstok Need the tooth fairy to visit your house? Make one of these DIY jars from @Dollar Tree with your kiddo when they lose a tooth to attract the tooth fairy! 🦷 #toothfairy #parentsoftiktok #kidscrafts #dollartree #nightlight #kidsoftiktok #diycraft ♬ Daylight by Taylor Swift sped up - brooke ⎕ ⚭
Simply break open a glow stick and pour the contents into the mason jar. Then sprinkle in the glitter (silver tends to work best), cover the mason jar and shake it up.
The contents of the glow stick will only last for a few hours, so it’s best to do this right before bed.
You can also add to the Tooth Fairy story by telling your kid that they’ll know if the Tooth Fairy came or not by looking at the jar in the morning. If it’s not glowing anymore, that means the Tooth Fairy was there!
